You're really trying to go with the the last ten years were all part of a master plan. When exactly were they trying to put themselves in the position to win the Cup? Edmonton management thought they were a playoff team the year before they won McDavid. - Hunkulese
The whole purpose of the rebuild was to build a team that could contend for a decade or more. This was stated multiple times. The goal was not to make the playoffs here and there and simply get a few home games revenue and start over next year.
Did the plan go as they hoped? No. They said 5 years ( from the Taylor Hall draft) its taking 7.
steve Tambellini made too many mistakes early, as did MacTavish. No Oiler fan in their right mind would say the rebuild went as planned....but for all the (frank) ups ( and there were many)....we got McDavid. |

Not to mention to cap fiasco that is coming to them! - jessehub
Its actually a lot more manageable than less studious person realizes. |

That's grasping at straws bud, you think that many 1st overalls and being literally the worst or bottom 3 in the league for that long was all a huge plan?! I would have though you were smarter than that.
Yeah and the flames were trying to be a bubble team, that was our master plan
At least we played competitive, relevant hockey during those years. Most of the time. - Emcee27
If by most of the time you mean once, then yeah okay. |

You just said the rebuild was "the master plan" a few posts ago. "No oiler fan in their right mind would say the rebuild went as planned."

No, I said the whole purpose of the rebuild was to build a lasting contender. Read it again. Take your time. Nobody said each failure along the way was calculated. |

We finished just outside the playoff bubble I believe 3 years in a row 2009-2012 so yeah we were playing relevant games there

Arrogance? The whole purpose of this organizations rebuild was to put ourselves in the position to win tne cup...not be just a lower seeded playoff team. We arent a contender yet.
Besides....we took a lot of poop on Hockeybuzz for alot of years and nobody relented...you and your bubble team got this coming. - Larsson_fan

Oh..well I would hope so, you still had most of your key players in place from the playoff days. I thought we were talking about the amazing Flames rebuild. |

Well I'm the first to admit the rebuild was full of pitfalls, errors, bad luck and bad decisions....but I honestly beleive we have come out the other side. Plenty of work still left to do though. |

Here's the definition to help you along:
This idiom refers to a drowning man grabbing any floating object, even a straw, to save himself. It was first used by Thomas More in Dialogue of Comfort Against Tribulation (1534). |

Well that doesnt apply...I sure as (frank) wasnt drowning. Cool though, I didnt know that. Its kinda like the expression 'Son of a Gun'. |

Im happy with the Oilers overall but they still need a PP point man that can make plays and bomb a puck ( a Giordano type would be perfect).
We need some scoring on the right side aside from Leon. Eberle is having a dog poop year, Jesse P is a year or more away from replacing him if need be, and we would prefer to see back Leon at center since production from his hasnt dropped since coming off Connors wing.
Goltending is great but we badly need a back up. |

Wasn't sekera supposed to be that guy?
It's a nice luxury to have if you can keep Leon at wing, but if need be, I'm sure he'll look more CJ better backbat centre now than he did when he first came on the scene.

Sekeras had never been that guy at any time previous. He is a 30-35 point D man if hes on the top pairing, but who wants that. He is an excellent 2nd pair, puck possession defender and was the BPA at his position in free agency that summer. No complaints. Salary about a million too much. Oh well. |

So if Lucic set the bar at 6 mill I'm guessing Leon is worth 9 and I cant even put a number on Connor. Pray the cap goes up A LOT my friend. |

Holy fck my Oiler Bro! We are 6 points behind you. That's with the Flames struggling with adversity for much of the year & Oilers being applauded for there transition from rebuild. If we had split the games between our two teams, which isn't out of the realm here, you do the math with us being ahead 4 points & the Oilers dropping 4 points.
For the record, Flames aren't 5 years into the rebuild. Ground zero was when we traded Iggy, JBO & Kipper retiring. We are 3 full years into the rebuild & this is our 4th. Call our playoff appearance luck all you want, but with the 3 1st overall's Oilers had, you guys were unable to get out of a perpetual lottery position. Past may be past, but there's a good ole phrase about throwing stones when you live in a glass house. & you are on a Flame thread throwing boulders.
But I think Knotley needs to ramp up the budget to construction of more Beverly Memory care Nursing homes because there seems to be a lot of Oiler fans with a bad case of Dementia. |

Maybe if Tkachuk could have stayed out of the box and Elliott wasn't such a sieve you guys might have split the season series.
