it just works out that they have 10 million in deadline cap space this year that they can't take into next year
no reason to try and figure out why, it's just the way it is - jimbro83
It's prorated. What's really going on its let's say you want a $4M player half way through the season. We'll his cap hit to you is $2M. If you have $2M in cap space half way through the year, you can afford a player whose salary is $4M. Rather than work through the math the media will instead say that team has "$4M in deadline cap space" so you can compare the rangers space to their actually salaries not remaining cap hit. Make sense?

yeah, we got 10 million in cap space to use by wednesday playa
Let's play this out: if they got Shattenkirk and someone like Sharp or Boyle, where are they as a Cup contender? - airjan23
Closer they they are now. I think they can sneak by the east as currently constructed, but the West is another matter. Our good record against the west notwithstanding, playoffs are a different story. The checking and hitting intensify, I'd be concerned by the D taking a beating from crashing forwards,

how many deadline deals are you really hearing about vs the ones that would go down this summer?
also, not asking for any specifics but how do you get this info?
Jan - I have to respectfully disagree with you on Stepan. i actually thought it was one of his better games. He seemed to almost take Matthews out of the game, which is a tough thing to do. He made some great defensive plays that lead to scoring chances. he is snake bitten yes, but he is still contributing defensively.
Sounds like Shatt nixed a deal that would have sent him to Tampa cause he said he wouldn't even talk about signing a extension there. He wants to be here, we need him. I really wish we could work this out. - B2B76
i think Stevey Y may have hurt TB a little with some of his recent contract negotiations. the way he treated MSL, forcing some players to take less money just because he can.
I completely agree, i think Shatty wants to know what the rangers would be willing to pay him before he accepts any type of deal with another team.

He wants to know what he'll get on the open market, can't really blame the guy. The deal he nixed was apparently $42Mx7, so you know he thinks he's going to get at least another million per on the UFA market. I wouldn't pass up that money either. Sucks for STL but anyone who blames him is delusional.
...and even with all the wheeling and dealing, it still came down to a bold prediction by Mess, a couple of double OT scrabble goals, a goal post with 10 seconds left in game seven, and the playoff of a lifetime by Mike Ricter, before the could hoist the cup. Just think, without all of that, we'd be waiting 77 years. - OLDSCHOOL#6
That's about what it takes the winner almost every year. As others have stated, hardest trophy to win in sports!
Even last year, Pitt was crazy good in the playoffs, but if you asked them, I'm sure they'd tell you it was a monumental effort to make it all the way.
