I would actually be tempted to give him the long term he's looking for, if that's his price. Cheaper than Pleks, FFS, and a much better player.

I would do the the 3 year contract in a heartbeat.

Habs haven't had top 6 players outside of Pleks (no longer) Pacioretty, Galchenyuk and Gallagher.

UFA sees guys like Beleskie cash in. So it is draft or trade for them. And Bergevin finds trades hard so getting one for no assets out of the KHL you gotta keep him.

And try to get Kovalchuk to come over

Not bad imo. I think he's worth both contracts. I'd do the 3 for 7 so they can flip him on the last year when he still might have some value.
