Hagelin is an overpaid role player and Hornqvist only has 1 year left. Not a huge risk.

Teams are not gonna let players like Hornqvist walk.... come on man

Unless Fleury Agrees to waive his NMC to be exposed to the draft, they have to expose Murray.

Need to make a trade there before the expansion draft.

- BINGO!

I was under the impression that JR could buy out Fleury before the expansion draft (and this seems to be his intention, regardless of whether Fleury would waive his NTC). If this happens then the O and D are in play.

Exactly. Either Fleury waives his clause and gets picked, or he doesn't and Murray gets picked. No reason to worry about the O and D.
- Kineada

I don't know that they'd pick Fleury if he waived.

They have minimum salary requirements they have to hit too, remember. So do you take

Fleury and Stempniak for $7.25 million

or

Ward and Hornqvist/Hagelin for $7.5/7.75 million?

If Murray is available instead, sure, they'll take him, but there's nothing saying they have to take Fleury even if he agrees to waive.

Player A costs around twice as much as Player B. Who do you choose?

Lets see some video of both players first.

TIOPS stating that the Pens are still looking to add defense: Kulikov and Quincey being targets. Fehr would need to be moved to free up space. Shattenkirk's price still out of the Pens range, but they will keep an eye on him up until the deadline.

There's also another EC team they're pursuing that isn't a seller yet, but will be a seller soon.

Pens also like Brendan Smith.

- Rinosaur

Smith yes...

Quincey no...

Kulikov I dont know...is he basically Simon Despres? (physical gifts but no hockey sense?)

Do we even want another defenseman like that? Aren't we getting close to lateral with Chad Ruhwedel.

The Penguins MUST expose a goaltender, regardless.

It can be an RFA goalie, too, but the Penguins don't have one that qualifies.

I can't see a situation where he doesn't get between $3.5M and $4M. He's a legit top-four dman and in the Pens top pair.

Yes, a buyout is an option, but is absolutely last resort.

If they do that, they have to expose Murray.

Seems to me their only real option is to trade Fleury for a different goaltender+ and protect Murray, or tough it out and lose him.

I don't disagree, but I believe the market will say otherwise. If they're lucky they can get him for $3M, but they'll probably have to add more term.

It was in response to previous poster saying GMJR's intentions was to buy out MAF. Couldn't they just sign any FA backup Goalie to expose after hypothetical buyout?

Well, the NHL expansion draft is June 21st, and contracts don't expire until July 1...

I don't think you can just sign a guy who didn't have a contract the previous season and then expose him.

Rules say it must be a goaltender under contract for 2017-2018 or an RFA who has received a qualifying offer for 2017-2018.

I suppose in theory you could do it, but then that player likely won't be drafted and you'll be stuck with him on the books for the next season.

Nice, rolling into the stadium series game against the team I hate the most and sporting the worst defense in the NHL. Who's going to play point on the PP? What a nightmare.

No doubt. I think the cap figures you have for Dumo and Sheary are gonna be real close to what they actually get. I think Schultz gets slightly more. I like Kunitz at that cap hit and think he'll take something similar to that to stay here.

Absolutely not, green on the 2nd pairing Schultz know the 3rd. It's as simple as that.
- j.boyd919

Schultz is 6th in points for a 1D. Why would green slot ahead of him. Since points is all that matters. He's clearly an upper echelon 1D and doesn't even get 1st power play time. 4th in plus minus too. He should be in the norris conversation and not a 3rd pairing guy.

Give Schultz and Letang the PP time. Green could use the extra rest as he is older. You would have essentially 2 top pairs with Green on your team and he would allow you to deploy Letang even more aggressively.
- Feds91Stammer

Stop with Green its a waste of space and pure trolling. He's obviously a guy JR has no interest in. Tatar made a little sense but also wasn't a guy JR seemed interested in. Its debating things that won't happen.

Not sure why everyone is sold on him, but was trepidatious about Sheary.

First, for you analytics groupies, he's pretty bad in terms of possession.

Second, he gets overpowered WAY too easily and it terrible on the cycle.

http://www.espn.com/nhl/p.../id/3042083/jake-guentzel

Against the better and more physical teams, he has little to no shots on goal and doesn't get as many points. Against the weaker competition he excels. The proof is in the pudding.
