I honestly don't know what to think at this point. I have to believe Maatta is the odd-man out to be exposed, but that doesn't mean he gets selected and may still be a Penguin.

JR is going be given a chance to prove his worth once again, that's for sure.

If they go 4-4, itll be Sid, Geno, Kessel, Letang, Dumo, Maatta, Schultz, one of Hags/Horny

Hornqvist has higher trade value than green

And the Pens have been the best at drafting.

Top pair D is easier to find than top 6 forwards.

Yes... huge risk. They were big parts of a cup winning team. If guys like that were so easily had they would have had guys like them three years ago.
- Rinosaur

Green talk is just stupid. We don't have a need for a defenseman like him. Stylistically he's like letang, schultz, daley. Offensive instinct guys. We actually needed a hainsey type pk first guy. 3 offensive dmen is enough. The other 3 would ideally be balanced guys and maybe one lovejoy type.

And protecting 5 dmen to sacrifice hornqvist doesn't make sense. I have no problem exposing hagelin as you lose a good player but also clear a lot of cap, but hornqvist fills a specific role and plays with crosby.

That is an extreme oversimplification of these players.

Honestly, who knows. UFA market looks like trash after Shatty... and who knows what the trade market/cost would be.
- j.boyd919

The only way Shatty gets less than $7 IMO is if the following occurrs:
1) takes a cut to play on a team he just REALLY wants to play for
2) he gets LONG term, like seven or eight years from a dumb team

It is, but he's not wrong. You can't have an entire d-core of offensive-minded dmen. You need to have a balance. Last year the Pens had a great balance of every element.

Not that I view him as a bad player, but I would be open to exposing Hagelin in the expansion draft. The pens have some young cheap players that could replace him. His 4 million could go a long ways elsewhere.

Mike Green has better shot suppression metrics than all 3 of Letang, Schultz, Daley. This fallacy that he is only an offensive minded D is comical.

You only see them as offensive D men because they put up points. What you fail to realize is for the most part they put up points because they don't spend a lot of time in their own zones.

I don't fail to realize that, but there are other aspects to the game that can back-fire when you don't have a balance of guys who either more of a stay-at-home or a bit more physical, etc...

In regards to Green to the Pens? I dunno. It's tough, I'd like to see him in the 2nd pairing with Maatta this season.

Dumo-Letang
Maatta-Green
Cole-Schultz
Hainsey

Looks like a (frank)ing amazing defensive group to me. If there was no expansion I'd say yes in an instant. It just depends on what the trajectory of guys like Guentzel, Sprong, DP, etc. Are headed in the eyes of the organization. And if they can deal with the loss of Hags or Horny or someone else. (I think they can but who knows for they want to.)

The draft affects all of this. Not that you don't know that. I can't envision the Pens picking up any more quality players they risk having to expose before the draft happens.

I personally think the Pens are done dealing as far as defense goes. At this point I really only see the Pens maybe going for a rental RW and that's it. I would say they move Fehr out for a draft pick, but I think they hold on to him to meet draft requirements. I don't think they get Shatty, Duchene or Landeskog which I'm sure you didn't believe either.

My guess is the Pens get, or at least attempt to get, someone like Vrbata, Eaves or maybe someone like Gionta from BUF.

UFA forward options would be decent if you lost Horny. (Oshie, Radulov, Jagr, Gagner, Vanek, etc.)

I agree...and I think the Pens will try their best to re-sign him.

EDIT: thought you were talking about Horny. But still think Hags is a great fit.

The problem is, going forward, not only are we losing premium assets from the trade itself....we are potentially losing a very valuable roster player in expansion.....AND probably can't re-sign Schultz due to Green's $6M.

Guys like Daley, Fleury, Fehr, Kunitz, etc...may be opening up enough cap space its not an issue. Just so many moving parts to this deal, I'd rather just re-sign Schultz to a cheaper deal and not lose the assets.

I agree and think BOTH are great fits.. but at what point do you move on and let the young guys take over?
