The sudden firing of Montreal Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien shocked the hockey world. But the reason why the coach was fired may be even more shocking.

Hanafin, thought he was a core piece for you guys?
- BlazinMike

He's been playing 3rd pairing minutes and, frankly, struggled heavily this season doing so.

It's hard to see them trading him, but with so many young defensemen in the system, it wouldn't be outrageous.

And truth is we desperately need some firepower up front. Our offense is anemic.

Therien should've been canned 2 years ago, IMO. Anyone catch Shawzy's revenge on Krug last week?? Good scrap but Shaw absolutely stuck Krug for the W

I'm sure Shaw just stood there and took it too. An idiot who takes bad penalties, he is, but i doubt (if this report is true) that he would sit there and let someone talk poop to him on a personal level, coach or not.

Seems like a no-brainer in that case. I mean he is young so he could still end up being a really good defender but who knows.

Hate to say it but nothing suprises me anymore regarding pro sports.

Oh I'd hate to see him go because I do think he still has Ryan Suter-like potential, but with Haydn Fleury and Jake Bean still coming up, I think there's room for a defenseman to be traded.

Guys, Lightning are fours points out of playoffs and playing better. They wont be sellers. Drouin last year, Palat this year. They aint dealing.
- onehundredlevel

I said this the last couple days - unless they are convinced they can't climb in, they are not dealing.

UFA's, not Palat or Duchene. Schmaltz and Hartman just hitting their stride and you want to deal them? Makes no sense. Young, cheap, controllable. Not going anywhere.

They are 4 points behind NYI, which puts them 5 points out of a playoff position. Plus, they are behind 4 teams (NYI, FLA, BOS, PHL). It's hard enough to jump 1 team, yet alone 4, as it's unlikely all 4 will lose every night.

The Hockey News currently has the TB playoff probability at 22%. 1 out of 5 are not odds I'd bank on.

I believe they will move someone to free up $ for next summer, when they need to resign their own players. My guess is they move an aging vet or 2.

No question Al, and Keith seemed gassed and fumbled the puck at Corey's feet and bam it's in the net. Backfired on Q there.... Soupy isn't the greatest but you need to put some trust in him sometimes! Right there would have been one of those times...

That has always been my real only issue with Q over the years, he overuse of #2. I know he's a generational, 2X Vezina winner, abnormal lung capacity cyborg......but can we just give him 2 or 3 minutes less per regular season game TOI. Would it really make that much difference in said regular season? Especially since he's going to play 30+ a game come playoff time.

Back from celebrating Marcus Kruger's 100th career point....what a week.

I thought Hawks looked very well and a huge win against Minnesota considering that may have been the worst game I have seen #2 play in quite some time. he was horrid. 19 has awoken...so hopefully this continues. Big win and keeps the faint dream of winning the division there, although I think I saw something like Minnesota plays 23 games in 40 something days?

On trades.....IMO this team is a top 9 forward away from being a VERY hard out....AND an additional physical D man away from being a true cup contender.

A top 9 forward will allow Q to float 81 back up to 19 but also giving enough depth to line 3 to being a scoring threat IF the rookies 48 or 67 run into problems amping up their games in the spring.

A physical d man would help 7 and stabilize the back end a little more. However, asking prices for D men just keep going up....doubt Bowman pays that price.

Nobody loves mathematical properties more than a futures/option trader like me but me thinks if Stevie Y went to ownership in Tampa and quoted those odds he'd get one of two responses......(1) "so we were in the cup final a couple of years ago and now we're a 4 lousy points out of a playoff spot and you want to be a seller?" or (2) "never tell me the odds!!"
