No I don't have a Stanley Cup ring.
But I work off of facts not BS stats.

Here is another one just for the tank crowd

Of the top 50 rated nhl players (nhl.com Sept.2016), only 17 were top 5 picks. That is 34%. 1 player was taken in round 8, 1 player in round 7 & 2 players were free agent signings.

So this BS about the majority of the best players come from top 5 picks doesn't seem to work in reality.

- Reubenkincade

The best chances for successfully picking a star player to build around come from the top, it's just an undeniably fact.

The percentages for picking a Brad Marchand or Joe Pavelski are slim. No one is denying you can't pick star players in any round, however, when you get a crack at the top of the draft you get a legit chance to pick a player to build around.

For example, the Canucks top five scorers in franchise history are Henrik, Daniel, Naslund, Linden and Smyl. Two 2nd overalls and a 3rd overall.

Agreed.

To Toronto
Vancouver's 2017 1st round draft pick

To Vancouver
Toronto's 2017 6th round pick
Toronto's 2018 4th round pick

As I stated in 1 of my comments I would love a top 5 pick. It is not a be all end all though.Do we need several top 5 picks like some claim we have to have I don't think so.
Also the argument was about a majority of top players come from top 5 picks. Unless 34% is a majority then that argument is totally flawed.
But hey what do I know I am just a stupid JB apologist.

Greg has been awfully quiet the last couple days...that must mean he is working on an Earth shattering story possibly a package deal including Magma and Skille?

Hainsey sucks and is a horrible teammate. Yet he got a 2nd?
I can't wait to see Benning pick up two first round picks.

Sure, but it's not like Carolina is fighting for a playoff spot either.
35 year old, UFA, on a basement team..

Perhaps that narrative that GM's view this draft as garbage is valid after-all, though that pundit did say 1st rounders would be moved at the TDL.

That 34% is totally subjective, you understand that...right? We agree, for the most part, on what each other is saying, however, if I was gonna choose a player to build around as my star piece, I'd be choosing Crosby, Toews, P. Kane, Stamkos, Malkin, Tavares etc. before I picked PK Subban or Brad Marchand.

That's all I'm saying.

I guess according to some Hainsey is a better player then Sbisa and on an expiring contract. Cheaper also.

The draft isn't "garbage" it just lacks the top tier game changing players. Which is usually from 1-4 players and it lacks depth past the 2nd round. It's weaker then normal but seems you could still get a decent pick.

Totally, i just find it odd how someone like Stoner, who frankly is cheaper, better and younger goes for a 3rd yet Hansey gets a second + prospect (Kristo blows), even when salary retention is included.

Hopefully a sign of things to come.

Marner no, he's good but not build around good(personally) I like the list, Eichel replaces Marner IMO and Seth Jones is added. What do all these players have in common... hmm

Marner is stupid good. I don't like giving credit to players on the leafs (simply because I don't like them) but Marner and Matthews are 2 excellent players that I would be more than happy to build my team around.

He's just being a dink. Give up trying to reason with him. If he can't see the odds using a sample size of 11 rounds instead of 1/6 of one round then he's out to lunch.

Top 5 is where it's at. We've got our defenseman from there, now we just need our centre and winger.

Yup, I agree in principle I just can't stand the ďiscussion when people say that you need several top 5 picks, like it is some guarantee that you will win the cup. Nor do I think that a "majority" of the top players come from the top 5.
As with any discussion of ranking players, draft position, quality of competition and analytics, all are "subjective" and will debate these when people try to ram them down my throat.

I am still hoping for the luck of ping pong balls & we get Patrick.
I think we both want what is best for the Canucks and have several similar views, we will get to where we want to be it is just a few years away & our patience will be tested during these transitional years.
