Glad there are a few on here that get it .

You might want to hold off on the agreeing.

The measuring stick will be year over year, which in Evanders case is Dec 3 2016 - dec 3 2017. At that time we can add up the points totals and Kane projects to be a 50 - 60 goal scorer with 25 helpers.

I mean I know get being high on him and all, but damn.

Hearing the #Blackhawks have called the #Sabres on what it would take to acquire #Gionta. Right now sounds like a 3rd plus a late rounder.

Being high on more powerful stuff than Kane, methinks.

I said this in the last blog:

On WGR yesterday morning, they pointed out that the Chicago Blackhawks have six guys that have been on their team for all of their championships: Kane, Toews, Hossa, Keith, Seabrook and Hossa. The rest they've moved out and acquired as needed. The question is: is Evander Kane worth locking up big money for a long term, or are there other guys worth locking up ahead of him.

To me, the Sabres have two players that definitely fit this list: Eichel and Ristolainen. Reinhart is close, but I would absolutely trade him for the right defenseman (assuming he is available). I can't say the same for Eichel, and I would have to imagine any team willing to unload such a defenseman would be looking for forward help and not incredibly interested in Ristolainen, otherwise they would stay put.

Okposo and O'Reilly are already locked up long term, so there are four guys you have locked up, or will lock up in the near future. That leaves two spots. If this team is going to get that defenseman it desperately needs, you will have to lock him up as well. There's your fifth spot. Is Kane the last guy worth locking up? 30-some games of good hockey still doesn't get me to say yes.

"6" is an arbitrary number though
The Cap is higher now, and we won't be paying Jack & Sam 10mil each like the Hawks are with Toews & Kane

From here out, the Hawks have...
Toews 10.5m
Kane 10.5m
Panarin 6.0m (starts next year)
Hossa 5.3m
Anisimov 4.6m
Keith 5.5m
Seabrook 6.9m
Hjarlmsson 4.1m
Crawford 6.0m

That's their true "core" going forward...
that's 59.4million between 9 players

Now for us...
O'Reilly 7.5m
Okposo 6.0m
Eichel... tbd (7.5m?)
Reinhart... tbd (5.0m?)
Kane... tbd (6.0m)
Ristolainen 5.4m
McCabe... next deal (4.0m?)
Lehner... tbd (5.0m?)

46.4mil for our 8 presumed "core" players going forward by my estimation

And going by the Hawks pay structure,
that would leave us 14mil going forward which we can use to add 2 defensemen to the total as well (plus more even)

We aren't in bad shape at all as far as the Cap goes

Which is awful, and we should avoid at all costs.

They have three cups, so whatever, they already won.

We haven't made the playoffs yet (with this core) and need a bunch of D help

I would quibble with your numbers for Reinhart and Kane, but not to a degree that would change the overall idea that "we will be OK even after locking up our core". And if that's true - with Kane at a reasonable increase included - then I'm really hoping we can find the #2D in unprotected guys before the Exp draft.

To even put him in the category of a Tarasenko is laughable

I would put him in the category of a Patric Hornqvist

He has more goals than a few so called elite players as of right now. What does he need to earn that tag?

you would make a great cleveland browns fan

content with crap

and if you think that wasn't a shot you took at me, a reading comprehension course is in order

this is a buffalo fan hockey thread, and I will be damned if you think it's wrong to question why a team that sucks for 10 years, has scouts in europe, has signed ZERO players overseas

- homiedclown

To be fair...
we've drafted plenty of guys from Europe

As far as actually signing Euro free agents...
-it's not like a lot of significant signings are made
How many are actually worth it?
-they usually go to bigger markets
Can't make them wanna come to Buffalo
