A 3rd plus a scrub couldn't get it done??
Id feel better if it was a 3rd but I'm not going to lose sleep over this.
Would of rather had B Smith for that price. - MattStrat
Did Ken Holland come out and say Smith is available for a 2nd at 50% retention? |

Nope.
Just saying. |

If I am not mistaken Hainsey is the player's representative to the player's union (or one of them). He was one of the most vocal in trying to extend the last lockout and criticized Crosby for trying to work things out with the Pens' management on his own. I suspect that most of the players did not want a long lockout but Hainsey was one of the few who did.
I also heard that he is the oldest player in the league with no playoff experience. Definitely a questionable pickup, especially for a 2nd round pick, but I guess the team is really desperate on defense and didn't have much of a choice. |

He only cost a 3rd

I think his point is that Smith can play 2nd pair minutes while Hainsey cannot. |

With this upcoming draft being no where near what the classes have been the last 2 years, i don't mind giving up draft picks this year for the win now mentality. |

Only good thing is 50% of cap is retained by canes which leads me to. Relieve that JR needs cap room for a bigger trade |

A late 2nd.. is pretty meaningless. Rememeber everyone was up in arms that Schultz cost a 2nd? Lets all relax and not act like they threw away the future lol - j.boyd919
Canes 2nd and 3rd round picks past 4 drafts:
2016 - Janne Kuokkanen, Matt Filipe, Hudson Elynuik, Jack LaFontaine
2015 - Sebastian Aho,
2014 - Alex Nedeljkovic, Warren Foegele
2013 - Brett Pesce, |

Let's hope. Not a fan of this deal, but I imagine prices are still really high. |

I know the point.... there is just nothing to say Smith was available or for that price. Apparently they could resign him. |

Understandably.
What are your true thoughts/feelings on the Pens new acquisition? - MattStrat
Happy for Hainsey. He's a pretty good player who has flown under the radar for too long.
A bit of a gut punch to be officially selling again, but I don't think the plan has changed at all. |

Its a weak draft class. And there are not a lot of quality rental dmen especially now that we have 3 significant injuries which only added demand to the market. Any legit contender has to add 7/8 dmen this time of year.
Love the idiot now who questioned whether shat would get a 1st. St. Louis doesn't even need to trade him. To even get in the market for him its a 1st, 2nd, and sprong. Hainsey pretty much validates this. |

Meaningless in the sense that their actual value is not much different than say a 5th. |

End of the day he's not a top pairing guy on a team that is in anyway an average NHL team. He's not a top 40 dmen. And he's way too much of a specialist to say top pairing guy. Maybe he's top pairing overall as in fringe top 60 dman. - sditulli
That would mean he is a top pairing Dman... 37th in points among Dmen.. right next to Klefbom, Giodano, Justin Faulk... a few points under guys like Niskanen, Gardiner, Josi, Pietrangelo... oh and he's only got 7 points on the PP... he's got 1 less 5v5 point than Letang.. Letang has 14 PP points.. does that make him not a top pairing guy, but a PP specialist? Come on man, that's a really bad argument. |

You should send some of those picks to DET for some players. - Feds91Stammer
Possibly.
Think they're stockpiling to start poaching from teams desperate to get SOMETHING for guys they'll lose in the expansion draft or that are in salary cap trouble, like Minnesota and Tampa. |

He would be available for a very similar price. Retention though probably makes the price a 1st. |

Any warm body rfa defenseman whose a starter on their current squad goes for a 3rd round pick.
If your a dead zombie like Douglas Murray its 2 2nd round picks. |
