Hmmm, as I said to someone a while ago, I think this DL is going to be one of those where 1-2 moves triggers a lot of activity all of a sudden, teams waiting to see what others do, and for the market to define.

it seems the bar has been set pretty high if Hainsey is fetching 2nd +

I have a random feeling that tonight's game is just the final scouting for both Chayka and Bowman. Maybe the Coyotes leave a player behind before they hop a plane back to the desert.

Despite the hype, Schmaltz is still learning and his game marginalizes along the wall and in tighter checking. Which he will see a lot more of in the playoffs.

- John Jaeckel

This was more evident in his first stint. his board game has seemed to improve quite a bit, as well as his backchecking, which is exactly what you want to see out of a rookie - improvement, especially in the hard areas. He still needs to drive the net a bit more after the pass, but I think he's doing well. Will it be enough for the playoffs? Ummm, maybe? Getting a 3rd line winger to play next to Hossa that could possibly fill in if Schmaltz can't handle it wouldn't be the worst plan.

Not trying to devastate you or anyone. Honestly. I just don't see how those statements prove anything one way or the other when he makes them every year.

I LOVE his effort on the back check. I do still see him getting beaten along the wall. But he isn't shying away either. Just tryna be fair. :D

Plus Daley is out 6 weeks after surgery. The deal seems to make a lot of sense for the Pens. Good move.

One thing I need to mention, JJ, is that I do very much appreciate your work on this blog. You are interesting, informative, diligent, reliable, intelligent and write well. Especially for someone living in St. Louis surrounded by Blues fans, your contributions, and that of the other posters, greatly contribute to my enjoying this "golden era" of Blackhawks hockey. So thank you.

You are welcome.

I hope you can also appreciate that I ask people to consider both sides (which is really what I've been doing a lot of here with regard to whether the hawks will/should make a deal in the next week or so), and I try to myself.

Sure, I have an opinion.

And even if I disagree with yours—at times, in some ways—I respect you for having one. And you have the right to share it.

I have been impressed by Schmaltz since being brought back...and Panik tries almost every shift but he still doesn't have the hands to be a legit scorer. Maybe in time Panik will develop more of a scoring touch...Reminds me somewhat of Sharp his first few years here-He had would get chances but often wouldn't convert...But that changed over time.

Issue is..which I think John has been pointing to-
One additional player can make a huge a difference and then some can be slotted differently and in turn become more effective.

If I'm Bowman the one thing that would scare me about the Wild is their checking line, which does that well, has also scored over 50 goals. The Hawks probably need an addition to compete with that matchup.

Kruger, McNeil and a 2nd for Hanzal.

I believe they will get a bit more and probably focus on a rushing defender or JUST picks.

But Q will run the match-ups and Boudreau will be stuck that stupid look on his face. Having a good checking line means nothing when you can't get them in the right situation, especially in the playoffs

Gotta give them credit however. They possess great center ice depth and they are pretty good at faceoffs. Also, they have size.

Not to intimidated by Boudreau either. He does have a good team in front of him though.

And there I agree with you—but do you need ALL of them—possibly at the expense of an upgrade this year?

I think that's a really fair question. I will also remind you this same debate has gone on here the last two deadlines, and what did the Hawks do?

- John Jaeckel

Stan would be foolish not to try and do something, the real question is whether he can find a trade partner in a deal that makes sense for both teams. Its not like the hawks don't have room for improvement If he has to give up one of our developing players to improve the team for the next couple years, lets hope he does it.

yeah, even though my opinion of Panik has evolved, he ends up flattening so many scoring looks with poor handles and poor light shots. Oh he's got a terrific poop on the wall and smarts, and is good power shot on many hard passes but simply lacks some pepper.

Al, th a Wild can be deadly if one hawk guy misses being close and pressuring when the puck goes back to the Wild...and that nasty Stewart had couple big goal total seasons, so they can hurt you with Schroeder speed and the third member of their present 4th line Tyler graovac is a big fluid guy too who has been a checker his entire career and he has six goals!
Haul a who isn't on the 4th line now has hurt us with his speed and goals and pomeville is a declining snipe but don't take I'd pppoint shot as any indication he still can't play.
Nino plays angry Coyle too and easily Mike Koivu has alway been an underrated Anisimov whose been solid beyond AA for a decade. Don't forget the "slumping" Zach Parise...

Dubnyk is not great just big, and all these guys and the defense can be out skilled and puck possession is the key and breaking through that funnel to the outside boards...
There was a lot of gunfire from the Hawks and it must continue without the attackers sucking air on the transition backside pressure...that is the key to a hawk win..if either team isn't upset in the firs round.

Random posters. Sources I talk to, as of this writing, all say the Hawks are exploring deals, primarily for left wings.

If/when they tell me the hawks are standing pat, or zeroing in on something, I will pass it along. That's what I do.

From rotoworld:

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired Ron Hainsey from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a 2017 second-round selection and Danny Kristo.
The Hurricanes will retain half of Hainsey's remaining $2,833,333 annual cap hit. Hainsey is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. He has four goals and 14 points in 56 contests this season and has averaged 22:20 minutes per contest. He'll be a big help to the Penguins given that they're missing defensemen Justin Schultz, Trevor Daley, and Olli Maatta due to injuries.
