I'm pretty sure if you watch the games...you can tell his good plays from his bad. I know the analytics crowd doesn't think you can see how good/bad a player is from watching..
- Garnie

Oh I don't mean analtyics, I just mean he gets the puck out in some very tough situations quite frequently, he actually has gotten better at pokechecking and carrying the puck out of danger. The problem is his (frank)ups are glaring...sometimes happening in situations where even if he didn't (frank)up, the puck would still have gone the other way. I'll tell you there have been many more times this season I've noticed him make the right play and then paused in shock realizing it was Gardiner who made that play. I'd say about 25 games ago, I changed my tune when it comes to him. About the same time I noticed Carrick was the new him. Carrick actually illustrates how far Gardiner has come.

MA Bergeron with a better agent.
- AdamFrench

Except Wisniewski is bigger and actually throws body checks and has a big shot from the point. I think Wis is more Souray than Bergeron.

Continueing on Wis Adam, he could play 22-24 minutes a night, not just PP time and was always on a 45-60 point pace, the problem is he'd always either get hurt or suspended.

Besides his first two seasons, Bergeron was never on the ice for more than 18 min a game. And in selective situations.

He's done.

Why take ice time away from kids?

FFS, I'd rather have Corrado out there. Or that Ruskie we buried in the press box.

Never said sign him. But I do think he's better than Maricin, Hunwick and Polak. So if he were to take ice time from anyone, it would be those three.

Speaking of Marchenko, wonder why he hasn't slotted in yet.

This pretty much sums it up.

I don't find him dislikeable. I think he has an awesome talent. Like most Leafs fans, I would never go back in time and choose him over Matthews, but there is definitely valid arguments to be made in his favor.

The Jets have a lot of good, high-end talent.

- Aetherial

Yep in general their team is very impressive, just need a bit more on the back end and in goal.

Their d with Morrissey, Myers, Trouba, Enstrom and Buff is fine. Just need to get healthy. Goaltending has let them down big time.

Laine doesn't even make the Top 3 of players I'd choose to take from the Jets.

Anyways, Rielly and Zaitsev were garbage last night and were the only reason the game was close, Leafs completely outplayed the Jets.

They better clean that crap up for tomorrow night's game.

It is good to see the "who is the best rookie" question finally put to rest. Last night clearly shows Laine is the best rookie in the NHL this season.
- punchanello77

Rookie shooting statistics as per NHL website:

http://www.nhl.com/stats/...ed,gte,&sort=shotAttempts

Matthews = +86
Laine = -62

Laine is a world class shooter, but if he wants his team to win more games he'll have to up his.

jets have talent, but aren't a very good team. their gm refuses to make moves to make them better despite having some prospects to deal.

it doesn't bother me too much, let them spin their wheels.

Uh, they were a lottery team last year that has improved this year, and they are one of the youngest teams in the league. They just let Ladd go. Goaltending and losing Myers and Trouba for chunks of this season is why they are a fringe team right now. Trust me, they're still going up. In many ways they mirror us. The only real difference is they have Buff and we have Andersson.

Yep..I don't mind Gardiner...still don't think he's a top 2 material yet but he carried Carrick for awhile when he was struggling. We really need a #1 still before we can get too excited IMO.

they are a bottom 10 team.

until they make some moves to improve their current nhl roster, they'll stay bottom 10, like edmonton. buff and enstrsom are both declining from here.

Really? I thought the 1st goal ( Laine's 1 timer ) was more Komarov / Kadri hesitating along the wall....puck should have never even got out front.

Kadri took a dumb penalty on the next goal.

They havent been great...but I wouldnt pin the goals on them last night IMO

Their backup goalies are sporting a stellar .890 spct over 28 starts, while their rookie starter is .910.
So, who on their roster needs improving on? Pretend for a second they are fully healthy and have had Stafford, Little, Trouba, Myers not missing any games....
They were also only a 78 point team last season. They have more kids coming in Connor and Dano.

stafford sucks.

dano has been unimpressive. connor is interesting.

they have 5 good forwards and a couple good dmen. you know what, so do 90% of teams in the league. their forwards outside of top 5 are junk.

injuries happen. if you don't have depth to deal with it, that's on the gm.

on 78-point pace again this year. really fallen of the pace from 2 years ago. unless they add in the offseason, they'll be on the same pace again next year.

cautionary tale. at some point you need to add to nhl veterans to get over the hump and keep getting better.

A few of their forwards outside of the top 5 are kids: Copp, Lowry, Petan, Armia, Dano, plus Connor.

Their d: Buff, Trouba, Myers, Morrissey is solid.

They have vets: Buff, Wheeler, Little, Myers....

I stick with my initial point, their goalies have let them down.

I'll gladly make you a bet for next season, the Jets will be a 90 point plus team and in the playoffs.

vets are getting old. some of those young forwards might not get real good until mid-twenties...like kadri.

sure. i can't see whoever their gm is making moves to improve the roster.

What's the bet?

Nope and it cost us a goal.
- burn

Nope? That's a fact not opinion. In no way shape or form did Martin cause that goal, Leivo chose to leave the zone early and got puck watching.
