It'll be just the draft all over again for Calder votes. 90% of NHL voters will pick Matthews. Leaf haters will say Laine is better. It'll happen likely forever - Santo_44
only risk to Matthews is the Toronto-based media... who will go "miles" to appear to not be Toronto biased...
I'm not actually sure why everyone (other than Matthews and Laine themselves) cares... its not like either of them are out of nowhere candidates....
As a Leafs fan... I have a pretty good idea of what the Leafs have in Matthews, what they have in Marner etc... no semblance of any thought of "wish we had taken Laine"...

I know that. We got Carrick for taking his contract on. He never fit into the plans and was tossed aside.
Anyway, we're going to go in a circle here so let's just hope he's picked up!
What happens if he isn't claimed? He ends up on the big team? - Aaron_85
He realizes his NHL career is over, and ponders whether or not to finish the season with the Marlies. |

It will never happen because of the pre-season hype, but if I had a vote right now, I would select Marner over Laine and Matthews. |

It isn't a favour for the Leafs. They clearly don't care if he's on their cap for 3 more months, they want to try to give him a chance on a cup contender and the best way to do that is to offer him for free.
You are correct on cap/contract space but it's easier when you aren't giving up assets. Maybe move a bad contract yourself if need be. - Aaron_85
Cap space is a commodity. His caphit has negative value; even if its short term.
Taking him for free is a favor to the leafs. We have to take a contract back if he is to get moved. |

Really? Matthews is turnover monster. His neutral zone play is scary. *meaning he causes them and takes them away* |

Agreed. For me theres a better argument that Nylander has had a better season then Marner, then there is one that Marners been better then Matthews.. But they have all been awesome. |

Leafs 3 rookies that could win Calder in just about any year. Good problem to have |

Agree they are all awesome, but Matthews is the one! Did you see the goal where that dirty bastard on Carolina hooked him from his neck down to his ankles and he still scored a highlight reel goal? Very few in the NHL make that play - not so sure Nylander or Marner make that play.

No doubt about it.
But right now, Marner is doing more creative things with the puck.
And let's be honest: these awards always value flash over things like sound defensive play.
You aren't going to win the Calder by creating neutral zone turnovers. |

Then there's even guys like Brown who is on pace for a 20 goal rookie season (bear in mind of course that Monsieur Smear was our top goal scorer and only just hit that last season) - obviously nowhere near Calder consideration, but a great rookie season nonetheless. |

He is on the Marlies. IIRC, he has not been on the Leafs' roster all year.
Putting him on waivers is essentially reminding 29 other GMs they can have him for free - it saves Lou having to make 29 phone calls.
If he clears waivers, there is no obligation to bring him up to the Leafs.
If he isn't claimed, he will remain with the Marlies...or retire.

Marner is impressive, but he plays with two proven NHLers - I think he's made them better but still Van Riemsdyk is a 30 goal guy. Laine is also very impressive, but he plays with a top ten centre and another solid NHL player. Matthews has played all year with two rookies. |

Matthews is my Calder pick and it's not close. Marner and Laine could score 10-15 more points on the year and it wouldn't matter.
What he's done is insane to me, one of the most impressive rookie seasons of all time. |

I think he's sensational too, but all time? See Gretzky, Selanne, Ovechkin , Crosby, Sawchuk, Dryden

All the rooks have been awesome. Marner has my vote as well. Creates plays out of nothing. Something seems to always happen when he is on the ice. Babs says that he has Mathews and Marner on seperate lines because they both drive there lines. But when they are on the same line IMO its Marner that drives the line even with Mathews on it. He seems to slow the play down and creates the space needed. By a hair i pick Marner. |
