Still have to meet minimum exposure rules:
Player Exposure Requirements
* All Clubs must meet the following minimum requirements regarding players exposed for selection in the Expansion Draft:
i) One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons.
ii) Two forwards who are a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons.
iii) One goaltender who is under contract in 2017-18 or will be a restricted free agent at the expiration of his current contract immediately prior to 2017-18. If the club elects to make a restricted free agent goaltender available in order to meet this requirement, that goaltender must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the club's protected list.
* Players with potential career-ending injuries who have missed more than the previous 60 consecutive games (or who otherwise have been confirmed to have a career-threatening injury) may not be used to satisfy a club's player exposure requirements, unless approval is received from the NHL. Such players also may be deemed exempt from selection by the League. - Leafsandbolts
So they have Horton and they can resign Smith.
Or they can pick someone off of waivers.
They won't expose any of Bozak, Komorov, Rychel or Leipsic when they could trade them for value. |

Can't use Horton as per rules. They will have to resign players like Smith but don't have enough empty contract slots to avoid exposing players of some value to expansion draft. It is the same for all teams, bobby. |

So why hasn't it happened?
And why is Smith still being put out there when we're trying to protect a lead? - lumlums
Id be very surprised to see Smith gone in the next few games like some people suggest. Babs likes him. |

The last couple he hasn't been that great, I can see him getting some bench time.
Not saying he's really ever been great, but losing more and more faceoffs could be his end.

Under 10 mins of ice time sat, and under 11 mins last night.
The playoff race is nuts. If a team goes 2 losses in a row right now could kill there chances it seems. |

These are all the different players I've been reading and hearing about that the leafs are or aren't in on before march 1st. Which one(s) would you say if true they should go for?
Montour
Trouba
Shattenkirk
Duchene
Landeskog
Boyle (Tampa)
Rick Nash |

does Smith still (/again) have to clear waivers to go to AHL?
if not, he's gone after next two games imo.
might even be benched rest of the season just to make sure he isn't injured.
Smith and Laich (Laich resigned for 1y --> wouldn't be surprised if Leafs want to keep him in the organisation in coaching staff going forward) to meet expansion draft requirements on FW, Marincin or Marchenko on D, and any of the goalies outside of Andersen on G.
Then, depending who actually gets protected by Leafs on FW (my guess is Kadri, Bozak, Martin, JVR, Brown, Komarov and Rychel/Leivo/Leipsic) LV take one of Leivo / Rychel / Leipsic during the expansion draft.
Unless Leafs make a big trade and package JVR + Leipsic/Leivo/Rychel + good pick(s) in a trade for a young topline D (Ana?) or a young topline FW (Colorado?).

Only two really worthwhile in my opinion.
Trouba I haven't seen playing enough though - always read he was only interested in joining a US team though (due to some strange link to his or his father's copmany?)
Shattenkirk not too sure about him (UFA end of season, high cost, Leafs need different d-men, age) |

Leivo leipsic Rychel should all be protected over Martin imo. Theyd probably never take Martin anyway. |

I dunno, George McPhee is pretty old school. Martin seems like the kinda guy that he might go for. |
