I can't even remember when a Leafs trade rumour came to fruition. |

I saw since returning from injury Ben Smith not only has the worst possession numbers for the Leaf's centers but also the worst FACEOFF % by a fair margin. What the hell is it with this guy being on the team. - iTOLDu

That's funny. The reverse does happen though right? Babcock won't be coming to Toronto. |

to be quite sure, Leafs at maximum make another 1-2 depth moves (like the Loov-Kalinin move) and just go with the current team. There isn't much not to like apart from the evident gap on D, and that's very tough to address now. - MaximusAurelius

if there is a big move coming, it could be like the phanuef trade. something nobody saw coming
but yeah, minor depth moves is a what i see. player for player swaps. we only get draft picks if we're taking on salary. |

not sure people didn't saw the phaneuf trade coming - at least quite a few were praying for it to happen! |

sure - people were speculating he may be moved.
but if anyone proposed he would be moved to ottawa they would have been laughed off the board. let alone anyone having an idea of the return. |

Good news: Ben Smith only needs 2 more games in order to meet the exposure requirements for the expansion draft
So after that, we'll see Gauthier back (does Smith have to clear waivers??).
On that note, the forwards that Leafs would want to protect are probably:
Bozak, Komarov, JVR, Martin, Brown, Kadri, Leivo, Reichel, Leipsic.
On D: Rielly, Gardiner, and probably Carrick.
So that's 12 guys for 8 spots.
Rielly - Kadri seem like the 2 certainties to be protected.
Not sure if LV would offer a contract to RFA Brown - can Leafs negotiate a new contract with him before the end of the season?
If there is an important trade made by the Leafs, I would not be surprised if Leafs include one or more out of the remaining 9 in a deal, just for expansion draft considerations.. |

They absolutely have to protect Brown - he's on pace for 20 goals in his rookie season, you don't let that go.
Personally I expose Komarov. He doesn't look like the same player this season, and is now taking a spot with Kadri based on reputation and not performance.

Absolutely. Younger, cheaper, and definitely playing better (despite a limited sample size). |

I think its 10 spots 7 forwards and 3 defense, Or 8 skaters.
