I just always thought you did what you had to do to win games..cause that's the point of playing the game, is to win. - njdevs29
sure.....doesn't mean that fans can't find it boring though. |

Pierre Lebrun gave an interesting example of why the suitors for a guy like Duchene might be more limited than you think. If a team trades for him they not only give up current players, picks whatever but you also got to assume they are gonna want to protect him in the expansion ( 7 forwards) that opens up that team to losing another player that was supposed to be protected. That has got to be factored into the equation. We don't really have that issue. Therefore a package of picks and players might get it done. |

So, can we move onto something more interesting then?
I'd like the Sens fan to explain to me why the Senators aren't an Original 6 team even though they were one of the original 4 teams when the NHL was formed. As I heard it they even got a letter or reinstatement from the league...

Research says that teams that made it through the Great Depression and WWII were then considered original six. The Sens, along with the Millionaires, Maroons, Wanderers, Bulldogs and the Arenas all folded before the term was coined.
The timing was also key for when it was coined because it recognized 3 American teams where all of the true originals were Canadian. |

An interesting tidbit there is the Montreal Wanderers existed for 6 games in the first NHL season before their arena burned down |

The Toronto Arenas didn't fold. They became the St. Patricks which became the Maple Leafs. But most of the Original Six (except the Canadiens and first Senators) are in fact expansion teams. The NY Americans would have made it through WWII if the NHL didn't refuse to reinstate their franchise - most likely because the NY Rangers had influenced them....
The problem really is the NHL apparently doesn't know what the word 'Original' means.
This is a bit like Donald Trumps stance on immigration because his family were immigrants (like almost all of us) and his wife is a recent immigrant.... Technically the only job she stole was getting screwed by the Donald although I think we all might now. |

Kalinin on waivers! Guess this opens up more playing time for Blender. Unfortunate, because I liked Zubrus 2.0. Big body forward that's strong on the puck. - NaNa04
The problem is even Dainius would be embarrassed by Kalinin's numbers. I liked the guy too but at some point you need to produce... unless your Jacob Josefson.
Maybe they should put JJ on the 4th even if he doesn't play like a 4th line center.... |

I'm too bummed to worry about JJ. George "the Animal" Steele died.

Blah, blah, blah - Original 6 means nothing to me. Just that those teams have been in the league longer. There are 30 teams in the NHL (soon to be 31) and they're all equal in my book. (except the Rags)

Biggest difference is that Zubrus was grossly overpaid for never producing anything. Kalinin was still a low cap hit. |

The term for the "Original Six" wasn't used at all until the 1967 expansion to 12 teams. Thus the older teams we dubbed the "Original Six" even though only Toronto and Montreal had teams at the inception of the league. |

SJ needs a backup. Need to start preparing for the expansion draft. Get something or possibly lose him anyway. |

That same year(14-15) Lucic had 18 goals and 44 points and was traded for a 1st, prospect(Miller), and a player(Jones). Jones was then traded for a 1st. So, Boston got 2 1sts and a prospect/player(Miller now plays on their team) for a 44 point player.
Cam had 27 goals, 42 points, was 33, and didn't have a full season since 08-09. The writing was on the wall. |

Right, but if your not Toronto, Montreal and maybe Ottawa your franchise was an expansion team also. Just a pre-1967 expansion team. The NHL considered the teams added in the game 1920's league expansion. And expanding into the USA was a big deal.
If the NHL expanded into Russia and doubled in size would we be the Original 30?
31?

Let's say Fowler for example, Anaheim may lose an important forward already, let alone take on a 34 year old at the expansion draft. And I don't see a lot of teams that are as deep as Anaheim on D. Trouba would be the guy I target, but he would cost too much for this team to give up. - Devils9503

If shero could pull it off we'd be good in the expansion draft too, because we would only protect Greene, severson and fowler. Won't happen though. |
