There was no money in the '70s and '80s and it was the best era the NHL has seen. But then the 90's rolled around and guys were starting to make millions of dollars a year. And it was all downhill from there aside from a few years after the '04 lockout.

I liked hockey better when it was considered a "second tier" sport as well.
Frankly, I blame Bettman for coming from Basketball and telling the NHL owners he could turn the NHL in to the NBA on ice.
He's made the owners dumpturcks of money, but it has seriously changed the game. And in some ways, for the better.
