A team that I see similar to the 2011/2012 nucks is how the NYR have been handled in the last few seasons. Shipping off players like Duclair / 1st round pick / 2nd round pick for Keith Yandle. We all know how that worked out and where Yandle is now. The NYR AHL team currently sits in last place in the AHL, so it just goes to show what happens when you hit the panic button on trades for help now and rentals. All I am saying, you can only mortgage picks/future for so long before it catches up with you, and any Canucks fan could see that what Gillis did with deals like Roy, Ballard, Andrew Alberts, Chris Higgins (worth the 3rd rnd pick), Max Lap (not worth the 3rd round pick), Sammy Pahlson (two 4th rnd picks), Zac Dalpe (4th round pick).

FYI - all the players mentioned above where acquired with picks going the other way. That is a TON of potential prospects that we missed out on. Obviously hindsight is 20/20, and good teams need to make trades for rentals if they want to go deep into the playoffs, but there are also teams who realize its not their year, and ship Tomas Fleischman and Dale Weise out for a young 24 year old former first rounder (Philip Danault) and a 2nd round pick. It is deals like this that the Canucks need to make.

to add to the Montreal trade.

Montreal essentially traded Diaz to the Canucks for Weise,
Signed Tomas Fleischmann to a PTO (eventually a 1 yr contract)
flipped both players for a former 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick.
montreal in turned flipped Diaz for a former 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick.... WTF

Developing draft picks or waiting to see if they turn out takes time. Correct. It's a key tool for teams. However, succes for a team is a whole different set of criteria that isn't about time and waiting on draft picks. That's my point. If it was just about drafting and waiting I can list 20 or so teams that have been doing that over and over.
- Nuck4U

The thing with the draft picks is we really can't rush them into the NHL and with a lack of depth of guys pushing to play in the NHL, it is hard to not want to see BB given a shot right away.

The publicly stated criteria for success, or goal, was to make the playoffs. I hope we get some extra draft picks as a consolation.

Exactly. This isn't "panic" like other posters on here seem to suggest, it's simply realizing we aren't that competitive team anymore. Were the team on the other end of those deals now: poopty team needing to load up on picks in order to get the train back on the tracks.

I already edited my original post once, I didn't want to edit it a third time.

EDIT #1 - If I only my Dad was around when I was younger to teach me how to properly post.... ughhhhh

The problem is, the team didnt see this early enough where they could sell high on players and recoup for a retool - a la Chicago for like the past decade. Now the unfortunate situation is the assets are not very good anymore and as a result, this might as well be a ground-up build.

As Codes said, they need to be active. I know I laughed when I saw the plugs Toronto signed and then was shocked when they flipped them and acquired 3 2nd round picks in a week, plus a few other assets. JB doesnt need to take risks on "nearly ready" players like he did with Clendenning; take picks or real good young prospects in these deals and build

I can't sit here and say I knew how bad we would be, but I honestly feel that any Canucks fan had to know this day would eventually come, obviously not ever knowing the extent of how bad.

Boston completely pushed Vancouver around, and I remember thinking, if this is the model that teams are going to go after once they see the Bruins success, we won't be able to repeat moving forward.

- Codes1087

That's why I said people wanted a retool to add size. MG failed. JB was brought in. But by then. Well as we all know it was too late.

Acquiring picks hasn't been one of JB's strong points.

Exactly, but 5 years after being swept by the Kings we still haven't started a rebuild. 5 wasted years.

JB as a scout is money.
- Codes1087

Meh, he took Virtanen. We'll wait to see with OJ. Was disappointed he didn't take Tkachuk.

To me his best moves have been as a GM acquiring Granlund and Baertschi.

Like we said in the last blog, orders from the top. The result is apathy. Once baseball starts it will be much worse than it is now.

Both he and Linden have said they are done dealing them away at this point, many times. This is a tired, overposted idea IMO

You are right. It was where Jim Benning was flying into to meet with other Nucks management to go over JB's scouting in Europe and go over trade scenarios for the upcoming TDL.

This organization doesn't know how to say bye to ex-players. It is like pulling teeth.

Eddie Lack had the fan base in tears.

We want to extend Miller and Burrows again

I've never met a Canucks fan who loves Miller. Not one. I Really hope they dont resign him. Or if they do, it's after they trade him somewhere else. You're right about Burrows though, should have been gone two years ago when his value was a little higher. So much sentiment around players. Except Edler, who ironically is probably the best out of the old core but everyone seems to hate.

Yes. Asset management will help. With transition. How much we will see. All depends on returns, right? As for trading away 3rd and 4th rounders for help. That didn't hurt Canucks prospect pool. It was the failure of MG's 1st and 2nd round draft picks.

This is same issue now with transition. JB has no first rounders he picked on the team. So until that happens we won't know the impact of prospects. Tree only draft pick of JB's now. But we are seeing what some of his trading and free agents has set up. Bo of course the shining light from MG time.
