Like I said when those moves were made, they will make little difference long term. Here we are, Miller done in a couple of months, Vrbada gone, and we still picked Boeser at 23 and finished in 3rd best lottery position after these signings... looking like another high pick coming... I understand how strong you felt about your original positions on these acquisitions, but all you feared hasn't happened. We still got an excellent prospect our one over achieving playoff season. We look to be picking high the two seasons after that and so on... who cares if there will be a couple of 30+ year old players for a couple of seasons after the Sedin's. Every team has room for a couple of vets.

I never understand this attitude about the transition. People want to lose to get a top 3 pick. But they want to lose all season long and look like they were in the games they lost. They want them to score a lot of goals, while playing strong D, but still getting outscored. They want to lose all season while their coach does so respectively and look like he's got this team's future on track. They want to deploy a system that looks successful, but not actually win. They want all this while the team plays crappy AHL players and prospects only. No free agents. No trades for 23 year gray beards.

What kind of glue induced fantasy is this. If you are going to lose all season, it's going to be a horror show. The coach will look like poop. The D will look like poop. Scoring will be poop. The media will be poop. The fans will be poop. Hockey will be poop. It's all poop that these people wanted.

Exactly and the poop never stops because of course, losing begets losing and it's a never ending cycle. Only one team a year can win the Cup and usually it's the team that's lucky enough to a) Be extremely healthy in the Finals, b) Get hot or have a hot goaltender at the right time and c) Have players who overachieve in the playoffs

When I say Gillis set up Benning, unknowingly, I mean from a draft perspective. Come on guys you've gotta read between the lines. Everything can't be explained to you.
- LeftCoaster

You mean having the 6OA waiting for him?

That's decent and should help any GM with the right selection... but hardly counters the mountain of poop JB has to shovel to see any light at the end of the tunnel.

(d) have enough talent, depth and good coaching to survive the season well enough to make the playoffs.

I'm not saying any of that?

I'm refuting Don's claims that mgmt doesn't have playoff hopes.

- belcherbd

Yes, you did.

You asked why JB isn't talking to Hansen and Burrows. I said you don't know that he isnt.

You asked why they are playing Miller this much if they don't have play off hopes... I explained one reason. That's the coaches choice. Do they tell him to alter the roster to one less likely to win?

How do you know he hasn't been asked? Or his agent hasn't been asked?
You are not usually this naive.

- Marwood

I had thought I had read that he said he hasn't? Perhaps I'm wrong...... I don't have time to look right now.

I do still believe that playoffs is the goal, not that it should be seen as a bad thing necessary and that just because they want to make the playoffs that will mean they will be buyers.

1040 or Botchford or Gallagher will assume they haven't and then whip the hysterical portion of the fan base frothing at the mouth.
I go with, we don't have a f*cking clue what is going on behind the scenes.
If they don't do something by the TDL the reaction will be worse than a game 7 final loss in the city.

Only thing he can do is pull a Vrbata. aka provide a list of 8 non-playoff teams. Hansen isn't a pos so he will provide a proper list
- CanuckDon

Hansen also said that he realizes that if he does put 8 bottom teams one might grab him because of his contract. Someone brought it up here ManVan or Neem and then I read it on Twitter about an hour after Hansen saying the same thing.

Can you imagine if Benning came out in September and said our goal is a last place finish You are exactly right. They have never been buyers at the deadline and they won't be for at least a few years.
- CanuckDon

Then we would be the Leafs

On the bench and in the lockerroom, that is the goal I'm sure.

If you think management is still putting the playoffs as priority right now, then above anything else, they will still make moves to get there before the TDL passes. That means picks and young players/prospects are secondary to the playoffs.

I need more than respective but contradictory statements about "goals" from management to believe it. It would need to be backed by TDL deals and judging from last season when JB was saying the exact same thing... he did absolutely nothing to shore up the roster to make the playoffs. No, in fact he tried to move the best Dman on our roster at the moment along with a 30+ goal scorer from the previous season off the roster for picks/prospects. Remember what our goal was? Forget the contradiction already?

"Goals" is a cliche for, "we are going to try hard" in sports etc.... I tend to look at the actions and inactivity to get my direction feeling rather than these cliches. And certainly not the same cliche more than one season in a row for Pete's sake...

not that it matters b/c people will interpret it whichever way they want based on what side of the fence they're on but:

"If the team comes to me, I give them my (trade list of eight teams) and then itโ€™s in their hands."

Sure he is the starter....Still doesn't explain playing him every night. If they were not concerned about playoffs they would likely like to get a good look at thier starter for next year.

Wouldn't you agree it's pretty hard to move Hansen if he hasn't been asked for his 8 team list?

- belcherbd

Willie is coaching to keep his job. Of course he will play his best option. You don't know if Hansen has been asked. Also, even if he hasn't I would be shocked if Benning hasn't been gauging interest from teams.

Why would the team tell Hansen they want to trade him 2 weeks before the deadline,? They will silently check the market and come back to him in a week. "Hey Hansen. Pittsburg wants you to play with Crosby. Will you waive?" No point pissing him off unless there is a potential move. Not rocket science. Not directed at you

The players can be coy, as well. It's all semantics to me and I'm sure management and players like f*cking with the media's heads when they can.

Who thinks at this point whether Canucks win or lose these next games if it has any bearing on if JB will make trades at the TDL?

My belief is while he won't buy he's not looking to sell just to pick up something. There is no financial pressure to get rid of contracts. A usual selling point. But there is a balance of interests over value gained over lost. That what they can get, or who is willing to provide a deal they like, will be the decider, if anything is done.

Burr and Miller could be resigned. They like it here and aren't looking to leave or peddle their services to the highest bidder if they go to Free Agency. Just like Hammer and Vrbata the team could have kept them here but chose not to do that. By not getting something for them at TDL was not seen as a loss or setting the development of the team back.

So what's the pressure of interest? Seems to be losing one player to Vegas. Something that could be dealt with later or accepted as opening up a roster spot for prospect.

Someone posted a while back that players lost in the expansion draft can't be traded back to their original team until after January 2018. Is that in fact the case? If so, there's another reason to approach Hansen with a request to waive for a specific team making a better offer rather than some random list of 8.

Trade him to a contender for the balance of this year. If his new team loses him in the expansion draft there's a better chance the Canucks could re-acquire him from LV during the off-season. If his new team doesn't lose him in the expansion draft he may be expendable anyway if that team is looking to bring up a homegrown guy at a lower cap hit next season. JB and the other GM could come to an understanding on this in advance, couldn't they?

So Hansen could fetch a pick or two for this year and still be back in Vancouver as an important and versatile piece on a weak team with no depth. It might cost some 2018 picks to re-acquire him but presumably those could be made up when he's traded again at the deadline next year as a rental. If they end up keeping him after parting with picks to get him. at least they've gotten more and better picks sooner than the ones they'd be parting with to re-acquire.

I believe you are correct on the trade limitations. Interesting post
