I would trade Brodie over Hamilton at this point. However, I hope we sign Dtone out of ARZ in the summer to be Brodie's partner. |

MATT BARTKOWSKI
GO FLAMES GO - The-O-G
I was reading about the rumored deal with Bartkowski. Which is a 2 way deal and apparently if it goes through he fits the criteria to be exposed for the expansion draft. This allows Calgary to protect Gio, Brodie and Hamilton otherwise it was looking like one of them might have had to be exposed to the draft.
If this is true that's a pretty smart move by Treliving. |

Why would one of those three be exposed? Can't they protect 7F and 3D or 4 and 4? |

It's something complicated enough that I don't feel like remembering. |

you have to expose minimum 1 Dman, right now the flames do not have a dman to expose so by default they would have to expose one of Gio, Dougie, or Brodie to comply.
You won't resign Eng or Widman prior to the draft just so you comply to the minimum exposure rules in fear of being stuck with them if they aren't picked up in the draft. So in theory signing guys like Bart make it easy to comply or face penalties (losing draft picks I believe) as long as they meet the 40/70 gp rule (playing 80 games last year makes him comply)
Avs did the same thing with claiming Barberio, now they have someone under contract for next season and meet the minimum exposure rules for the draft. Teams will be doing some odd moves at the deadline as Draft Primers to ensure they have opentiosn to comply....such as for the Avs if they go 8 skaters incase Beauchemin doesnt waive NMC or is traded and they go 7 fwds 3 D (EJ, Zads, Barrie)...either way post trade deadline they will have Barberio as the guy being exposed so they dont get dinged by penalties |

Yeah, I just read that. This poop is confusing.
Definitely a good call by BT, then. Smart move. |

and hes poopty so no one is going to take him, and he will just be put in the AHL anyways, reason why he went with the 2 way deal.
So Flames are forcing Vegas to either pick a goalie or a forward. They need to sign a goalie to an extension then go on from there. Bouma or Stajan are one of the guys they are leaving on the table? Vegas is getting screwed

What about Jokipakka. He meets the number of games played limit. I know he's an RFA, but all they have to do is extend him a qualifying offer and then he's available to be exposed in the expansion draft.

According to planmyteam.com Jokipakka can be exposed as a D man and McCollum can be exposed as a tender. It is not hard to select the 7 forwards, 3M, Bennett,Jonny, Mony and Brower. So without any moves they are set to minimize the damage. The problems happen if they do something at the TDL. |

The problem is Kulak if he plays 20 more games this year he is exposed. |

chances are they want to keep him, so they won't extend him prior to the draft so he is available to be selected.

you still need to sign another goalie. Protect 1 automatically and need 1 to expose. |

What if they decide to give qualifying offers to Rittich and Gillies who are both exempt? It is really unclear if this is enough |

QO window is after the draft, you would have to sign them to full on extensions and not just 1 year QO |

yup, there are going to be a few goofy signings and trades leading up to the draft just so teams create a bigger safety net in terms of draft protection.
I totally see someone trading for Hammond as an example, just so hes their goalie left exposed at the draft and will instantly be bought out or just sent into the minors next year. |

I thought/think RFAs (if they have the necessary pro experience) can be selected, even if they have not been signed. I think Vegas could go ahead and select Kulak or JJ if they want to. The RFAs just don't count towards our minimum exposure limit if they don't have a contract. At least that's the way I understood it when I read it.
For goalies. Would we really need to sign a goalie just to protect him? Seems kinda unnecessary to me. We should be able to expose our entire team and protect no one if we really wanted to. If we don't have a goalie we want to protect then I'd guess we can just leave that spot blank. |

Honestly I would rather see something different than an expansion draft next time. If the NHL wants the team to not be terrible for 6-7 years then don't give them a mediocre team to start with ...i would have let Vegas draft last in each round last year and then given them the 2,4,6,8,10 overall this year ...then let them fill their roster via free agency and trades ...they might be bad at first but a playoff team quicker than they will now

Cant select their rights if I'm not mistaken, they have the ability to talk to them but have to sign them to a contract prior before the draft, which I think they get a 5 day window to takes to UFAs and RFAs before hand.
I think thats dangerous game for vegas to start talking to average RFAs, why would they sign for a QO 1 year deal. I would see RFAs asking for fat long term contracts instead of just 1-2m 1 year deals. I dont like thats something Vegas will be doing. |
