Scott Burnside: The New York Rangers probably aren't getting enough love when it comes to Eastern Conference contenders, but if GM Jeff Gorton can find a way to add someone like a Kevin Shattenkirk, a right-handed defenseman with some offensive pop, the Rangers are going to be a force. No one is as good as the Washington Capitals, but if the Rangers happened to stay in the top wild-card spot in the East, that would mean avoiding the Metropolitan Division through to the conference finals, which is not a bad thing. But a blue-line corps that has totaled just 23 goals this season -- just four on the power play -- needs an inflator, like a Shattenkirk, and if the Rangers can acquire that kind of asset, their Stanley Cup chances go up exponentially.

Feels that way, doesn't it.

I hope we don't go after Shattenkirk. Trade for a guy to play with McD. If we can get Shattenkirk in the offseason great, but the price they're going to want won't be worth it. If we can get someone to play with McD and sign Shattenkirk in the offseason we could be set. Puck mover on every pair with a solid defensive dman opposite them.

1. Don't think of it as a 2nd pair, think of it as balance.
2. I've said this 100 times, he's not a shutdown type defenseman. He's a puck mover that plays good D, but not great. I would keep a puck mover on each pair. Imagine having a defenseman on each pair capable of putting up 40-45 points?

McD - defensive Dman. anyone that says otherwise does not know his game. he is a legit shutdown Dman. he adds in some offense but you can not compare him to the Karlson or Subbans of the world. those guys cant do what he does, he cant do what they do.

When have McD and Holden ever been together on the lineup sheet? I don't think I've seen that once.

I have to say guys, I want Shattenkirk. But do I want him so much where I am willing to pay a high price in player personnel at the deadline, all for the right to give him a contract in the off-season that will pay him north of $7 million a year until he is in his mid-30s.

It just feels like one of those things that feels good at the time, and is hard to resist, but comes back to bite you in the end. Like acquiring Herpes from the thing that felt right at the time when you went to Vegas.

Real tough call, but give me Wideman as a rental. And yes, I know I have mentioned Wideman too much. There aren't many right handed defensemen that fit the bill.

for me, i would pay any price to get Shatty other than the following: any one of our top 10 Fs(Buch in top 10), McD, Skjei Day, rights to first born child.

If we have to trade Gropp to get him, ok. I would think a 1st, Gropp, and Klein would do it.

Not saying he's not, but I think adding a solid defensive dman to play with him over an offensive dman. Especially come playoff time when they'll be going up against Crybaby/OV/Malkin etc. Splitting them up I think is a great idea IF we get him. I think we'll like Shattenkirk the first 2-3 years then hate him at 7 million+ in his early and mid 30's.
