Yeah, it starts with McDavid. Better goaltending in Talbot this year. And Maroon, Leon D (don't want to look up the spelling of his name) have been playing great. From what I've read and heard sounds like Larsson his 3D. That's not great considering you gave up top8 LW in the league that was a #1 pick. - bryant
"He's not the flashiest guy but that's not his job. He's sound defensively and he wins his one-on-one battles in the corners and he doesn't get beat too often one-on-one coming into the zone. So he's doing exactly what we needed him to do and it's worked out well.
"He's come in and shored up our back end. We're head-and-shoulders above where we were last year at this point as a team and I think he's a big part of it."
~Cam Talbot

Oilers made a lot of changes.. they didn't need to part with a 1st overall elite LW to get a stable D man.. I'd be pissed of the Leafs traded JVR for Larson, and Hall>>>JVR.
And it's not like Talbot is going to say anything bad about him.

oilers strength heading into last offseason: goal scoring
they have a poop ton of guys who can put up numbers
weakness? the back end... without question
larsson has stabilized it ... you cannot debate that
a player's value is highly contingent on the team he plays for and their needs. - Dozzer
I don't think you can attribute their rise in the standings to the trade as much as just having a full season of McDavid.
That being said, they removed a piece from a position of strength and filled a hole in a position of weakness... so it makes sense that way, but they should have been able to get more. |

oilers: 66P
devils: 56P
tough to argue that the offseason moves PC made were wrong at this particular point in time - Dozzer
They also have a full year of McDavid. If Devils had him, they'd probably be over 66P right now. Having McDavid doesn't justify the trade, it just allows it to be buried somewhat. |

Yup. If they'd have given up Nuge or Ebs for Larsson it's still an overpayment, but more understandable and excusable. Hall is still a top 5LW, and Larsson is average second pairing. |

What about trying to pry both Theodore and Montour from Anaheim? Or Madison Bowey from the Capitals. That would be pretty rad. |

Anaheim wont move any roster members off D. You'd get one of their AHL dmen and a 2nd rounder for JVR + some retained salary. Thats the only trade that would make sense for both teams.
Leafs need future nhl d-men, long term, and Anaheim needs scoring in the short to medium term, at a discount. - Buggy166
JVr and retained salary is worth a hell of a lot more than an ahl dman |

Taylor Hall is undeniably one of the Top 5 LWs in the NHL. He should have commanded more than Larsson. Period. |

Yep. And now everyone seems to think that because of this, the price for a guy like Trouba is Nylander plus.
Edit: eg. JVR+retained salary for an AHL D |
