you give him 23 mins instead of 27 and change the percentage of where he receives the most zone starts (currently defensive by large margin) and who knows you might get 82 very good games out of him (82 is an exaggeration of course but definitely more than now)

I think there's a lot of things that could be changed that would help overall. The problem is that our depth is so bad it's why we're in this predicament in the first place. He's had 0 consistency in who his partner is, which I'm sure isn't super helpful, he plays too many minutes because the majority of the rest of our D sucks. The coach doesn't seem to understand that playing a chip and chase style game isn't really what this team is built to do, but he's trying to compensate for the fact that the transition game sucks because the D group he has is terrible.

I'm seeing a common theme here...

If he's taking offense to it, then he must have been doing something different from the game plan. When people make general comments like that and someone gets upset and think they were referring to them, it's usually because that someone feels guilty about doing what the first guy complained about.

It's worse. It was the original plan for literally half of the first game. They gave those additional minutes to our second pair for half a game and by the 2nd period Risto had absorbed all of it and that plan was scrapped.


Edit: my point being that healthy or not his minutes were probably going to be this high anyways.

What 365 (and you right now) are saying makes sense. He's not bad in his own end, but he does excel a bit more in other areas. So why not take a guy that's a bit more of a stay at home grind it out type guy and give him those minutes in the D zone and utilize Risto in other situations that he'd be better served in while also being able to reduce his overall ice time. It makes perfect sense.

That's not to say he can't ever play on the PK or whatever, but if you can manage to get his TOI down so that his overall game doesn't plummet in the middle of the season, it's something that should for sure be done.
