IMO a player like Palat is the ideal target-- a relative value contract and a solid 2 way player with speed and some jam-- I still and always think the Hawks need a bit more jam-- which is why I'd hate to lose Hartman-- BUT if it nets the Hawks Palat-- I would do it-- I see Palat much higher value than Hartman potential-- Love Duchene-- but just too much money and we lose a core player-- maybe Crawford?

On the 'jam' front-- I've been wondering about Latta-- from what I recall he is an energy type player-- anyone have any insight on Latta?

Additionally if the Hawks can't get Oduya somehow-- would like to see then add a d man with some body presence-- it seems like if the Hawks even hit a little bit the results are very good-- perhaps because the other teams aren't expecting this from the Hawks-- not sure-- but more physicality on the team will help in April - June--

Brendan Smith comes to mind if Detroit retains most of his salary. He's a UFA so they may want something rather than nothing for him.

July 1, 1998. Remember it well, was driving from Grand Rapids to Toronto.

Hawks ended up singing Doug Gilmour for $6 million a year while the Brett was still on the market.

The rumor was Bill Wirtz still held a huge grudge against Bobby Hull, who at that time had also been (apparently) misquoted about some Neo-Nazi remarks in the Russian media.

Basically Dollar Bill is alleged to have said said: "We would have loved to have signed Brett. But (think about this in terms of the last 10 years) that would have meant having Bobby around."

Irony.

- John Jaeckel

I remember all of that, save your drive from GR to TOR of course, and also hearing later about how the possibliity of Bobby being a staple at the UC watching Brett play was kind of a non-starter.

I also remember the team crying poor saying that they could sign only one of the two in terms of Gilmour and Hulll but not both.

After Gilmour signed his deal, which I believe was the richest in franchise history at the time, Rosenbloom wrote a column poking holes in the position by management that they couldn't afford to sign both players.

Rosenbloom said in his column that Bill Wirtz (I may get the numbers backward but it all adds up the same) reportedly owned 13 million shares of Bank One or First Chicago stock (which ever it was back in the late 90's) and the previous day on the market it had gone up $3. So in one day, on paper anyway, the Wirtz's were $39M richer and could have afforded both players. I'm sure they could have anyway but that just further illustrated the trainwreck that was Hawks management back then.

$17,680/day for 7 days is $123,760, not $477,360. Am I missing something?

($106,080 / 40*) x 180** = $477,360

*40 = days remaining in the season on deadline day
**180 = number days in the 2016-17 season

Watched the NHL Network replays after the game yesterday. Vanek hurt his knee and left the game, got rolled up from the side/behind. Went straight to the locker room.

Haven't looked to see what his status is, but he may be off the board.

Athansiou would be the one who I'd want off Detroit. Problem is, Detroit would probably want hometown kid, Alex DeBrincat, in return. I don't think I would make that move.

He couldn't have been hurt that bad, as he came back in the game and took the last shot which caromed off the crossbar as time expired.

FWIW, I don't think even deBrincat is getting Athanasiou.

You might disagree with me wholeheartedly, but Hartman is a better, more mature, and experienced rookie than Schmaltz. And Schmaltz has some skill, and more playmaking ability than Hartman. Considering he is a "home-grown" prospect and isn't afraid of getting nasty or agitating, and also his improvement over the season...it shows that he is the more complete player.

I would not give up Hartman in a deal for Palat.
I'm really liking what I have been seeing from Schmaltz too.
Hanzel hmm I think I'm on the side of rather having Boyle if aviable. I think Tampa would have to drop completely out of the race before they started trading. They are still a team that could make a run if Stamkos can make it back.

I think Hartman is currently more developed than Schmaltz--and he has been pro longer-- is older than Schmaltz-- different type of players-- I think Schmaltz could emerge with elite playmaking skiils-- he 'sees' the game at that level-- and as Rico has said here-- he is gaining more confidence and less hesitancy to his game-- which bodes well for Schmaltz--

What I indicated in my post is that I wouldn't want to lose Hartman-- but would be OK if he landed Palat-- I just see Palat as a better fit to achieve WIN NOW--

But would love to keep both Hartman and Schmaltz--- you got to give to get though-- and if a trade for whoever advances the chances to WIN NOW-- you have to do it-- I agree with those here who say to NOT give up the younger players with upside for aging vets who will slow the hawks down--

The issue with acquiring Palat is not only the assets he would cost now. But also the assets he would cost in the summer. He is currently making 3.3M and a RFA after this season. He is going command more in a new deal. Not saying he is not a nice player but he is currently producing at the same levels as Panik and Hartman this season. Who btw cost about half of what he does and fill two roster spots. Hartman is signed for next season and Panik is a RFA who most likely will get a raise but both players will again cost less.

Huge pass on Smith. Bowman has positioned himself to really not require another team to retain salary for more assets.

Hey Golf I saw it too...that was brutal and he knew exactly what he was doing...retaliatory for the crosscheck. Lucky he didn't get his eye. Wings look like they're toast.

I think they're smart not to include Hartman in any deal. Homegrown kid with a ton of upside. One of the only physical players on the team as well.
