28 games (33%) left in the season. Consider the progression Hartman, Schmaltz, Kempny, Forsling, and Hinostroza have made in first the 67% of the season. Will their progression continue or will they hit a wall (or did they hit a wall a couple weeks ago and are coming out of it) or will they run out of gas? I am thinking their progression will continue during the next 33% of the season.

If Bowman stands pat, the Hawks still have a chance to come out of the West. They could also be out in the first round. It would be great to add Duchene (or a similar player), but I am not writing the Hawks off if they do not make a major move and I am not giving them the Campbell Conference trophy if they do make a major move.

Love the kid, but just not gonna moan too much about Toews not having a LW...when you consume that much salary it stands to reason there will be less to stock other parts of the roster. Generally, you get what you pay for.

seriously. when youre the 10 million dollar superstar, being able to elevate the play of a lesser and cheaper player on your line is part of the job description.

The question is how much lesser a skill player? Toews and Hossa can certainly be credited with a major assist in making Saad a very wealthy young man--

definitely can. although saad was pretty decent in his own right. but at some point hes gotta make due. its not as if hossa is dead yet out there. hes still an incredible two way guy. so it cant be expected that its just an all star at every slot in the top six.

Saad had 31 goals and 22 assists last season for a bad Jackets squad. I think they miss him just as much. Saad should have been one of our core guys for years.

Right now he's got 17 goals and 21 helpers. Anisimov been a nice piece, but he's by no means Saad. Huge mistake by Stan should have made it work. Couple of bad moves there...no Bickell buyout and then not moving Sharp at the draft for picks cost us.

Saad has proven he needs neither of them. He's a great player. Maybe a little less crazy spending/salary and he'd still be in Chicago.

Agree that he has 'matured' into a top player--- I'm saying he was mentored and developed into that player with the assist from his linemates in Chicago 19 & 88

and for the record I still maintain that the 2 players that will haunt the Hawks losing to Cap casualty are SAAD & BUFYGLIEN-- irreplaceable pieces for Hawks

If the Pats can come from 25 down against the team with the #1 offense and win a SB, the Hawks can win 2 rounds come spring.......

JJ, spot on. And further to your point about Wirtz & Co having a substantial financial interest in sustaining deep runs, keep in mind the rise of the Cubs. For the first time in nearly a decade, the Hawks are not the "it" team in Chicago -- and the impact is quite visible in the crash of the secondary market for Hawks tickets and the sale of Hawks merchandise. McD understands that the organization needs to not only make a splash, but achieve some measure of success as a result of said splash in order to remain top of mind for Chicago sports fans (and thus financially successful).
- gmurban

The crash in the secondary market for tickets is about price. What person in their right mind is going to pay $150+ for a 300 level regular season ticket - winning or not? I havent paid for a Hawks ticket in three years. Recliner and TV are just fine. No $30 parking, $8 hot dogs or $9 Bud Lights either.

If you let McD make decisions based on splash instead of hockey sense, things get worse and not better. Id rather see the FO manage for the long run. Cubs or no Cubs, baseball is not a winter sport. The two do not truly compete with one another.

Best bet is for Q and the staff to coach up da ute on the team. No complaints from me if it is not in the cap world to be a cup contender for a year or two. Lessons learned - dont overpay the superstars. Truthfully, had they waited a month to resign Kane and Toews rather than make "the splash", they would have seen the dive of the looney and its global impact on the cap, and maybe not paid so much for their core.

Also Saad also learned a lot while playing with them and while he isn't playing with them now he is still playing with good skilled guys.

Get over him. He's gone. But seriously, you must have sxpected this and more when Kane and Toews signed those ridiculous 10.5m contracts, no?

No question. But at the time Bettman was projecting a percentage of rise in the cap. Turns out the cap isn't what was projected. Reminds me of Animal House. "Hey, you trusted us, you f'd up".

When you can't afford your players because lucic is a 4th liner making 6 million, and mcDavid gets more than both kane or toews, you might understand.
