If I were Vegas I would just take a young RFA forward like Leier or Laughton who can play on my 4th line in 17-18. I wouldn't be too interested in UFA goalies in their late 20s coming off poor seasons.
- Feanor

I think Laughton, if left unprotected, isn't a bad pick. I think he and Raffl get the last 2 F spots.

7F: Tarasenko, Steen, Fabbri, Stastny, Schwartz
3d: Pietrangelo, Parayko, J-Bo
G: Allen

That leaves 2 forwards. Berglund and Shattenkirk are both moving on. I think they'll be okay.

- jmatchett383

Wow.. I just looked at their roster and thought they had a bunch more.. didnt realize how young they still are...

Fabbri, and Parayko are both protected btw.

Probably, though I think there is at least a chance they would take Read. He has only one year left, can play both wings, will be a solid 3rd line guy on an expansion team and can chip in on special teams too. Plus, he seems to be a classy guy and could be a decent locker room voice/role model for their younger players.

Didn't Florida take Vanbiesbrouck after a down year? That's why I say they may work with us to get Neuvy. McPhee is familiar and they will want an NHL caliber goalie or two. Yes I know everyone says Fleury will be their number 1.

Fleury can't be their #1. Limited NMC = must be protected.

Read is not a bad option if they have already used up their 10 slots for players not under contract for 17-18.

I'm curious about this. What's the ruling if Fleury were willing to waive his NMC? Not saying he would, just wondering if that's a possibility.

I don't know if a player is allowed to just waive his NMC without a separate transaction (i.e. trade) taking place. I suppose it could happen, but I think he knows that waiving it means he got to Vegas, something he may not wanna do.

the way I see it working for someone like him, and a few other guys in similar positions, is he will have only a few choices. He isn't an idiot and knows that Murray is the guy they need to protect.

He already has to give a list of teams he can't be traded to...so he can accept a trade to one of the teams that allow it, he can waive his NMC and be exposed to expansion, or he can get bought out.

For certain players who are under similar situations, it could be worth keeping that contract, as they might not get the same money elsewhere.

The other aspect is by not waiving, he plays in a city that knows he screwed them over.

Even if Fleury waives and exposed, I am still not sure he gets picked. He's 33 on a big contract with continuously inconsistent numbers. Pens have some young defensemen that could be more attractive, at least in terms of pick value. There are other goalies that are good available to Vegas

This trade deadline could be fun just because the expansion draft adds another element. Not only do you have to look at your roster and try to improve it but you also might have to see what guys you can protect and maybe where you might have spots open that you could bring someone in to protect.

Good point. The Pens may just buy him out.

Explain to me how Hakstol scratching Gostisbehere for yesterday's game is not taking away his ice time?
- MJL

Explain to me what happens when he returns to the line up? Is scratching Ghost a one game solution or a five game solution like Weise? When Ghost returns, he'll likely be placed in the same spot, right? Same situations. Brayden has a slow start to the season, may have not been scratched but was placed on the fourth line with less talented players for an extended period of time until he improved. Sitting Ghost does nothing. In fact, it hurts the team's chances of winning.

This might be a mind blowing thought process for you but the Coach is capable of being wrong from time to time.

Is there a buy out window before the Entry draft? I thought it doesn't start until late June.

You did not answer my question. You stated that Hakstol has not done one thing which is taking away ice time from Gostisbhere. How is scratching him not taking away his icetime. Once we resolve that, then I'll be happy to address your other points.

mid June...depends on the SCF a bit. Either way, they will have buyout options before the draft

I think the expansion draft changes some things. I think you'll see swaps of defenseman for forwards and vise versa depending on what teams have spots they can protect.

Like the Flyers will have a defense spot open since right now the only defenseman I can see them protecting are Gudas, Gostieberhere and Manning. If they can acquirer an upgrade over manning then they could protect the new defender.

And the flyers might move a forward since they can't protect them all.

I dont think teams, at least ones that have any chance at the playoffs, will do much to change the makeup of their team until after the season

I can see those types of moves being made. I'm sure if Hexy can package a 3rd round pick, Manning and maybe Raffl for a significantly better Dman than Manning, I think he could make a deal.

edit: That being said, I don't know if what I proposed will get you a significantly better Dman than Manning, but it can't hurt to ask around.
