They have 5 games in hand on Boston with only 3 points behind. The only team in the Atlantic that are close is Florida and the leafs have 2-3 games in hand on them. Tampa is pretty much out.

They are for sure in a great position still.

But it's up to them to turn this funk around. They could afford a little slip up with all the games they had in hand. But a loss to the Bruins would completely even the playing field.

Absolutely, Boston game is huge. They lose and that negates most of the games in hand. If they win it narrows the gap with lots of games in hand.

Who plans on a long rebuild though? It's just the nature of rebuilding through the draft.
Fans from the bigger markets aren't going to take waiting 6 years before being contenders, then a 3-4 year window, and start all over again very well.

Tanking blows. The league is going to have to come up with a solution.
