Had we been more patient with Bob, we'd be in a much better position.

Even trading Hartnell was a stupid move. The guy is still producing. I'd take Hartnell over Schenn at this point.

Simmonds and Voracek need to stay.

Giroux I doubt gets us what we deserve, but it's looking more and more necessary as his play continues its downward trend to briere status.

A lot of us jumped years ago. You guys are just too afraid to let go.
- FlyersNapTime

I'm not burning it to the ground. I know it can be helped by a trade or two but here's the thing. Holmgren did burn it to the ground and where'd it get him. Cap Hell, no cup, and pushed aside.

Hextall placed a plan in motion and warned us it would take time. Now 2 years into the plan (which we were told would take longer) people wants to bail and go back to the blow it up and tank option.

Great now you took a 5 year plan and made it a 7 year plan. I can't wait for year 2 of that plan to look worse than the Flyers do now and see people screaming fire Hextall.

I'm not saying firesale. I'm saying the team should have or could possible trade some vets in order to secure young forward talent that could blossom around the same time as the young defensemen.

This would likely have resulted in the team taking a couple steps back and finishing within the bottom 10 for a few seasons. They wouldn't have been an embarrassment to the sport; they just would have been a regular bad team.

- PhillySportsGuy

Again, I'm not on board with intentionally being bad, which requires moving good players like Jake/Simmonds, in their prime years, for a chance that MAYBE we'll win in 5 years.

Now, if you don't think some players will be a part of your future and you want to try to get young assets for them, sure. But intentionally making your team worse for multiple years is not something I'm down with.

Name one draft lotto that you can prove was rigged with the exception of Patrick Ewing.

Let me ask you this, why would the NHL want Connor McDavid languishing away in Edmonton?

No, resigning Hartnell when he still had 1 year left coming off a career year was a stupid move.

If Giroux isn't an elite player, but is being paid like an elite player, then why would a team give up anything significant for him?

No one is going to give you equal value for Giroux. Trading Giroux is basically just signaling that you're going to go for a full rebuild.

What exactly is the plan?

5 year plan leaves us on the backside of Giroux's career without a replacement on the top spot.

We need draft picks and free agents.

Trading Giroux will net you at least something of great value.

He's still a very good player who is in need of some motivation.

In five years Giroux will be a worse version of Vinny Lecavalier.

Agreed.

But the current trend in Philly is all our young guys have career years as their current deals expire. Sign new deals worth mega bucks. Start declining in performance.

We need shorter deals.

Vinny would have been great if he didn't break his back and face in his first few months in Philly.

Personally, I'm not on board with watching a team that maxes out at 10 wins a season for 3-4 years. If you try your best and fail, that's hard to take, but understandable. Intentionally being bad for a handful of years in hopes that you'll get "that one" player, to me, is disgusting, especially in the NHL.
- jmatchett383

Sure. So don't.

The Canes are putting together a competitive group at forward and on D, but they're still young and not ready to win. So they handcuff the team by re-signing Cam Ward.

It's like training with ankle weights.

Draft and develop Defense which take more time than forwards. Once you got that cupboard stocked (this is now done) then work forward. Hello Rubtsov!

Everyone is focused on getting G a cup when Hextall is focused on getting the Flyers to be Chicago or LA, many cups. Two totally different plans. Hextall sold Ed Snider on that plan that time frame and then Comcast will be pressuring him if it don't happen.

I could only speculate on to what we could bring back.

But I bet Edmonton would love to have Giroux.

You think a team is going to take on Giroux's total cap hit? Hardly any team has that kind of cap space. Flyers would either be taking back salary, paying some of G's contract or doing both like what the Leafs had to do.

And what are you going to get in FA anyway? Pay Shattenkirk $8M per year?
