The problem with the systems- particularly on defense- remains that, if they're gonna employ a plan to ring the puck around the boards so often, they have to have a more consistent and deeper in-zone presence along the boards. Too often you see the puck rimming around only to see no Oilers there and thus be received by an opposing blueliner without contest or their winger is too high and the puck gets picked off by an opposing forward that's lower down on the cycle.

Its been most evident against speed-based teams like Minnesota, San Jose and Pittsburgh. I'd like to see more adjustments by McLellan to address these issues.

As Draisaitl was down low on the play, he assumed the role of the C on the line. As such, Koivu was his check.

Russell, as the right side Dman, is supposed to keep the opposing LW (Zucker) covered. Instead of doing that, he chose to make a higher risk play by trying to assist Draisaitl along the boards and left his side of the ice near the slot open.

Though I don't blame him all that much as he had two men to "cover" (Zucker and Granlund), he picked up Zucker behind the net and was out-hustled to the puck.

As Leon had taken the role of C on defense, McDavid's man to cover was the right side point which- if you watched the play- he was doing.

The fault for the play lies mostly on Russell based on positioning and on whichever of the two in that board battle knocked the puck free and into the undefended slot area. Don't let your fundamental lack of understanding of systems get in the way of being a cock, though.
