I wonder if they're getting tired of waiting on Helly. Thought he was gonna hit the ground running this season.
I also generally like the players in the Peg, although I really don't like Big Buff. He strikes me as a Richard. - Victoro311

He's also 21. Goalies take a long time to develop normally.
I'm sure you have some stat up your ass to refute that. |

Why shouldn't they just tank at this point for the year and varly is back next year. |

That would be the smartest move. Trade away all their dead weight AKA anyone not in their top 6, Johnson, Barrie, and Zadorov. Possibly Soderberg. Recuperate as many assets as possible for the guys traded away, and just completely retool the bottom six and defense through free agency. Their core is still young enough that they can go through a mini retool without endangering wasting the core's window. Hell, we did that in Pitt and our core was all in their late twenties. I really, really wanna see Nathan MacKinnon do well. He's too talented to be wasted on a bad team. |

Really they are so bad that they don't need to intentionally tank at this point. That was just a terrible trade for both sides imo. |

Me too, he really needs someone to ride shotgun with him. Rantanan and Landeskog aren't doing it. I really thought Sakic was gonna try and pry Drouin from TBL. MacKinnon was so much fun to watch in juniors. |

We didn't plan to retool.
We just drafted really f'n good. I mean we had a period where every top 3 round pick turned into a NHL player and multiple guys look like stars or solid secondary core guys drafted way out of slot.
Jake Guentzel 3rd round pick. Matt Murray 3rd round pick. Would anyone complain if we took these two guys with say the 20th overall pick. Both would be solid first round picks at this point. Ditto sprong whose a steal for the second round (Admittedly in a very good draft class).
And then we add in guys like Sheary (apparently a true top 6 guy UDFA), Rust (getting a quality NHL regular in the 3rd round pick is good value). Maatta (getting a true 2nd pairing guy late 1st is well above average). Sundqvist against getting a NHL regular in the 3rd round is great value.
Those are probably the best though I might be forgetting some. But we haven't had a ton of picks. We retooled because our hit rates on picks is in the 80-90% range for a significantly period of time while also including some star power drafted late. |

I'm pretty sure the reason they fired Shero was to retool the roster... I mean hornqvist, kessel, hags, bones, perron, cole, Daley, schultz, Cullen, etc .. all added to the roster by GMJR. That's a retooling if I've ever seen one. |

We absolutely retooled. We went in a totally different direction in team construction. Exchanged Sutter for Bonino, exchanged Neal for Hornqvist, traded for Perron, exchanged Scuderi for Daley. Replaced the usual suspects in the bottom six with actual good hockey players like Comeau and Downie. Then we cashed in some assets to bring in Kessel and Hagelin and let the young players take over the bottom six roles as guys like Comeau and Downie went out. Oh and we also signed Cullen and Fehr.
Yes, the WB5 was massive to our success, but they were only one part of a larger scale rebuild that saw Rutherford take this team in a totally different direction. |

Ok I agree, but it wasn't a planned draft retool. The vets we ditched and replaced with different guys (usually analytical picks) was a retool.
But what we got out of the draft was pure luck.
