its because every kid saw how much cards from the 60s, 70s, and 80s were worth so everyone kept their cards in good condition. that and the companies made millions of cards. there are way more cards than there are people who want them. there are still unopened cases of cards from the early 90s and they are so cheap lol.

Same thing happened with comic books...once every kid started preserving them as an investment, there weren't rare anymore. It was a great way for companies to sell variants and hologram cards and covers though...
