I dont disagree with that im just saying in a scenario where you have to chose between making it right now and potentially nosediving next year vs missing out now and making it 4 straight times is that not an easy choice.

I understand your point on picks/prospects but im not talking about some grigorenko pick at 3rd overall you're more than likely getting someone who is a) going to make an impact soon b) going to be pretty good for a while.

- Sabresfan-365

We also aren't talking about adding pending UFA's at the deadline by trading away picks and prospects.

If they could add a player that can help and get something for Franson/Kulikov etc and make the playoffs why wouldn't you think they would be a playoff team going forward?

Is it because the Leafs have Mathews, Marner and Nylander and the Sabres only have Eichel, Reinhart and Nylander?

Picking 3rd this season. and waiting for that p[layer to mature.. Means 6yrs out since last top 3 pic. We will lose better players and get better players. They need to be a team, Stop waiting

When should it stop? See Edmonton.

It's not about losing anyone its about overvaluing whats already here, thats what went wrong with Toronto and Calgary. A flukey year led everyone to believe that certain players once deemed overpaid were suddenly key pieces moving forward and so when they tried to build on that and those guys regressed they came crashing down. I just don't want to see that happen.
- Sabresfan-365

So a team with a core group of

Eichel, Reinhart, Okposo, ROR, and Risto isn't good enough?

At this point it's about adding good value players especially if Nylander is a top 6 player next season.

You have been one of the biggest critics of the blue line from day one, if they move Franson and Kulikov and can replace them with one player better plus Guhle next year why would you think they get worse?

If this team made the playoffs the Nancys would be complaining that the sabres didn't win the division.
- Mentalorgasm5

Anything less than home ice in the 1st round of the 1st year back in the playoffs is unacceptable.

Schultzie!!

I'm trying out the steak on a cast iron pan in the oven technique.

Do I have this right?
Let steak stand for 30 minutes to come to room temp
Season with salt and pepper (more than you think I seem to recall)
Heat oven to 400 degrees
Put pan in oven for 20 minutes
Remove pan, place steak in pan return to oven
Seer for 1 minute on each side
Continue to cook for 2 more minutes
Remove, let steak stand for 10 minutes with butter on it

Close??

It only took Edmonton from winning the draft lottery for what the 5th time or something and drafting the best prospect since Crosby to finally be in position to make the playoffs?

The scenario im referring to is one in which the team flukes its way into the playoffs. I.e despite getting regularly outshot/outchanced they manage to squeak out enough points. Then suddenly you hear things like "oh gorges is fine value at 4 mil" or "bogosians toughness is what helped us get in" and in most cases organizations tend to deviate from their plan because of that short term success.

Nobody thinks Gorges is good enough

Like I said move a Franson, Kulikov or even a Gorges (I doubt Bogo goes anywhere this season) and add one decent defensemen and then you have Guhle coming and the offseason to find a Fowler or Shattenkirk player.

Nobody is saying this team is done as it is, nobody thinks this team could be a Cup team. But a playoff run even only a 5 or 6 game run would do a lot for the young group that is the future of the Sabres.

This board is hilarious.

Now today, while on a two game winning streak, we need to keep it going and squeak in. When it's a two game losing streak, then the people who are mad that we lost, had too high of expectations.

But it's amazing how quickly the perception of players change when this sort of run happens. And a potentially impatient owner? this is how Phaneuf at 7 years 49 mil happens.

if it happens because the core literally carries them there and suddenly this team is amazing 5v5 as a result im more than okay with that.

You have this "one and done in playoffs then fall to bottom" thing in your head like the "GMTM will only play Lehner" thing was in your head. Get them both out

The doubling down on lehner is admittedly pure speculation based on my impression of TM.

The one and done playoffs routine happens all the time and its remarkable how many mgmt/ownership groups fall for it. I dont want us to be that team.

This was never in my head a year and a half ago when i had close to full faith in our upper management. Now a part of me is just waiting for the announcement that Cam "couldn't pull his stats up on the most stacked blueline" Fowler is our new top pairing LHD.

Look no further than CGY. They have a relatively top heavy lineup that can't put it together 5 on 5.

Remember when they thought Hamilton would just make them a contender?

And completely ignored/forgot about the teams original flaws. But it goes to show, they added a top 4 d-man and a pretty good top 9 forward that year and still fell apart.

In response to 8 contracts left:

Signing Peterson and Borgen after the college season would take up 2 of those rather nicely.

- turbo044

good point...and if i'm not mistaken they'll need to make decisions on possler, Florentino and sean Malone from that 2013 draft class

In said players second season. Also, did they not finish worse than us last year? It's a process. I see what the leafs are doing and don't think it is as sustainable. So I'm not worried.

if this team made the playoffs now, especially after the obstacles they faced with injuries and inconsistencies, i'd consider that a hard-earned accomplishment

he and Gionta lead the team in a huge analytical flaw for this team--5v5 goals, yet both are mocked...I don't get it
