Yes, we should have low-balled him like the Canucks' $4.5M a year Alex Burrows is making to average barely a point every 3 games over the last 4 seasons.

I know, I know, it's important to reward players for what they did 5 or more years ago to keep yourself in contention, see Sisters, Sedins, currently averaging 28 points this year to Smith's mere 22 in 5 games less, with 0 points on the powerplay for Smith (and 2 shorties) vs 19 combined for the sisters during gift time. Interestingly Smith is on a pace for 40 points, but unfortunately not eating up $7M in cap space.

You should have read his whole post...

Happy with the Smith resigning, decent cap hit and length.

Remind me again, why are we letting Lazar play 6 minutes a night in the NHL?

because he is no longer waiver exempt so in order to send him down he'd need to clear waivers.............and there is no doubt we'd lose him for nothing

yeah, it's just so frustrating to see. Hope the kid turns it around but I fear it's time for a trade (maybe another 'talent' which underwhelms so far).

I think he still has value. he's very solid defensively, which is rare for such a young player, and he's shown that he has the ability to produce.

I don't think you're going to get a good return for JUST him but if you package him with 1-2 other assets I think you'd get a good return.

I still think he'll turn it around and be a solid player

Not sure how anyone can complain about the Smith deal after seeing some of the ridiculous contracts that get handed out these days.

A perfect comparable is Andrew Shaw. He makes 3.9 and got 6 years.

Smith is a solid player. He's a coach's dream. Let's see:

-good at both ends of the ice
-one of the fastest players on the team
-hard on the puck in the corners
-sneaky good hands
-hard shot
-1st unit PK
-can drop the mitts when needed

He had 25 goals last year and is on pace for over 20 this year. In the previous two seasons where he actually played a full season, he had 14 and 13 goals (playing with the likes of Chris Neil and Colin Greening) so it's not like this is coming out of nowhere.

To all the trolls: I'm not sure what you expect to pay a guy who has all those qualities AND puts up 20 goals, but to me this deal is a steal. He would have easily got 4M on the open market.

JUST fantasy talk...but what would your lines be if the Sens got Duchene.....say White, Dzingel, MacArthur removed from line up:

I might not be of the popular thought, but my opinion is that Duschesne is one of the most overrated players. He is quick he has skill but he gets superstar stardom fame but only performs like an average star. Yes he would be good on the team, but frankly I think White and Dzingle are worth more than him alone. If he really was that worth it, then Colorado wouldn't be a bottom feeder team for the last 3-4 years. He's a good depth player to have, but not one to build a team around. From what analytics show us, Colin White is more of that type of player you want to build your team around.
I say Sens should keep their chips.

Thank you!! I totally agree, I would add that Smith is better defensively, bigger and stronger than Shaw. For those reasons a better overall player but that's a fair comparision.
