It wasn't a first overall, it was the back end of the 1st rd at 21. Colin White, although a nice prospect could be a bust or more likely a 3rd/4th line winger.

Still too high. Like I said, it's not a move championship caliber teams make.

That "price" was still better served addressing bigger needs on this team.

The Robin Lehner we saw last night, while great, was the exception, not the rule.

- buffalofan19

I agree that the pick could have been used elsewhere but the end result is that we spent a first round pick on a goalie with above average save percentage. we once spent a first round pick on marek zagranpan.

The bottom line is the pick got us a good goalie. The gamebreaking you want to see is totally subjective. His save percentage is not

That's pretty much it. It's not Robin Lehner himself, so much as the philosophy that says the team needed to pay a high price for Robin Lehner that is wrong with the team.

Last night was great, but it's not the norm. If it was, Tim Murray would be a genius.

Or any goalie really, we were coming off last place. Did we really need to get into a what was a surprisingly expensive goalie market? Would Griess short term not have sufficed?

I know he's struggling in Rochester, but I'm not convinced Ullmark wouldn't have sufficed with NHL coaching.

The fact that the discussion is even worth having, let alone if it is true or not, says all you need to say about the deal. It would be different, though, if Nilsson was a guy that came up through the Sabres' system, but he isn't either. A guy who you gave up much less for is, at a minimum, giving you almost as much as the guy you gave up a first rounder for.
- buffalofan19

If it was a 2014 1st, I'd feel differently.

But Colin White would probably have been top 10 in 2014.

Maybe Murray was looking at the board and saw forwards were gonna be picked at that point and considered the fact that he has enough good forward prospects in Fasching, Bailey, Baptiste and Carrier to make the deal with Ottawa.

Not a chance he would have been a top 10 in '14.

If you really felt that way (which would also be alarming to me, but that's a different discussion), then you use it to address another bigger need, like defenseman, either with the pick itself or via trade.

Very good chance. He was highly ranked the year before his draft. Fell off his draft year.

numbers across the board between the two on corsica wind up being very similar (or at least on pace to be) Dont know that you can expect a career back up to maintain that sort of pace.

They used their own pick, which is different. And Fleury, for all his troubles, is still a better goaltender than Robin Lehner at this point.

How is it at all different? Both goalies were acquired for a single first round pick.

Robin Lehner. 921 save percentage
MA Fleury. 904 save percentage.

People on this site talk about Lehner like he's got an. 898

Are they? with the exception of maybe Carrier Colin White is at this point way more valuable than any of those forwards.

Wasn't he being discussed as the main piece in a potential Drouin deal?

It's not what I think just what maybe Murray was considering at that time.

Its more directed at Murray than Lehner. Nobody would care if we drafted him in the 2nd round or found him in FA.

This is the guy from Corsica's goalie measurements he tweeted out the past week or so.

Nilsson>Lehner

- sbroads24

I'm not sure what is more alarming, Lehner's giant neck tat or the Rainbow on the back of Nilsson's helmet.

He's more valuable and hasn't even played an NHL game yet? He's an excellent prospect but to say he's gonna be great, we don't know that, do we?

The unknown (ceiling) often creates more value. I mean Clayton Keller is an unknown but I assume you'd find him more valuable/appealing as a gm than say Fasching?

Because both are out of the ordinary. Are you ok with that response? Or is it not sensitive enough for you?
