No, that's not a good enough argument. Patrick Roy is a good coach because he won the Jack Adams. See how that logic works?
- Mononoke
The simple logic is that year, Patric Roy was a good coach.
And the Phantoms were one of the worst last year. Maybe it has more to do with making a complete roster overhaul signing the best, star caliber AHL players and having the best prospect pool in the AHL? It's not like bad coaches don't do well sometimes on the merits of their team, and we're only halfway through the season yet. I watch a ton of Phantoms games; people who also watch them a ton and know their intricacies on a game-to-game, shift-to-shift level also loathe Gordon for reasons I could write you single spaced pages about. Players can do well in spite of a bad coach, and they can do poorly despite a good coach. Go look at recent Leaf history for that. I despise Gordon on a process level. And no, I don't think he's anything more than a cling-on to an AHL All-Star team's success. Don't agree, fine. But don't just cite their record unless you believe also that a coach is automatically bad too because a team's record is poor. - Mononoke
Coaches need players to do well. Can you provide one single legitimate source who supports your claim and opinion on Gordon as a coach?

Hextall wants prospects to be part of a winning environment in the minors. So far this season, that's been the case. If you read Bill Meltzer's prospect updates, the major ones down there have been making steady progress. I associate that with being coached well, also. Goalies are doing well. D prospects are doing well. Forwards are fine, I guess. Best part is, they are not up here (frank)ing up their development in the poop show that currently is the Flyers. Hextall did a great job in LA with their farm team. Seems like he's doing the same thing here. It will eventually translate into the NHL level. |

Exactly. By all accounts the young players are progressing well on the Phantoms, and the team is one of the top teams in the AHL, but the coach is apparently terrible.

In your opinion would this Flyers team be a better team with Quenneville as coach? |

That's very hard to answer. Of course Quenneville is a better, and far more accomplished and experienced coach than Hakstol is. This team is basically in a state of depression. You can see it in their body language. Teams will often get a boost from a coaching change, no matter who the next coach is.

A few thoughts
It's pretty clear Claude Giroux's best years are behind him. It's been awhile since we've seen a couple of flashy assists on a nightly basis. Right now his production comes from simply being in the top six, getting the required ice time and being a player who simply touches the puck regularly. I'm not so sure this is a terrible thing. He's still solid at the dot. Sound positionally. If he turns over the puck, it's noticeable because he rarely does so. I still believe he could be apart of a Cup victory regardless if he's a C1 or a C2 for this team.
Line combinations. Change them before tomorrow's game. You won't get much fan support from me when it comes to Dale Weise but he's a physical presence. I thought the best balanced line up Hakstol put forth in recent weeks were against the Ducks. It really showed as we doubled up a good Ducks team 50 to 30. After the Sunday Ducks game, we were stunned against a hot Rangers team on a Wednesday. The Rangers are a good team. Since that point G is playing with Raffl and Read. Two very responsible defensive forwards but you might as well cut G's arms off.
Nick Cousins is a spark plug. I like the energy. Sadly though, he reminds me of a not as skilled and not as good looking Scottie Upshall. His PP time seems forced. He doesn't kill penalties. He's young but unless the Flyers have a definitive role for him moving forward, who is he to this team? |

Just seems to me coach is the one place where the team is free to get the best one available. No restrictions. No salary cap. Nothing. Was Hakstol the best available coach? If not then he's not good enough for this team. |

That's another question I can't answer. Hextall thought he was the best available. I doubt he thinks Hakstol is the problem now. At some point though, if things don't change, Hextall's hand will be forced.
It is incredibly disappointing that they came off of a bye week with the overall effort they gave tonight.
