Wrong. Flyers did not have the personnel to play Laviolette's ultra aggressive system in his final year here. - MJL
Agreed. To me Hakstol is boring, his system is boring, and most of the players are boring. So much vanilla on this team. |

I'd be ok with moving on from him. It's not going to happen though. Hexy going to his 3rd coach in 3 years would be a bad look. - PhillySportsGuy
He gambled too much and trusts him too much. He has a long leash. The assistants do not. A lot of what Hakstol does systems wise is good.....but his weak spot, from personnel to systems to everything, is relying too much on the simple, reliable, and ineffective. That's just a fact.
If I'm Hextall, I do not hesitate to trade the garbage like Streit and Del Zotto or replace the poop out on the bottom of the roster up front and on the back. This is still a wild card team and they're still around there with half the year to go. Hextall saw how much calling up Ghost meant last year to the big club. If they feel a couple of the d are ready (I think they are), then do it. Half this d corps is barely or sub-NHL.
But Hakstol needs some serious serious introspection on how he's doing too. I don't like to say it, but I am not sure how much he is capable of turning that spotlight inwards and pointing to his own flaws. He seems quite stubborn. |

Goes down to the AHL level too having Gordon-Cote as your brain trust teaching the kids. Last year they didn't even have a d coach.....so lord knows what the (frank) those two were teaching the d men. - Mononoke
And that is also on Hextall. So far he's proven adept at drafting and moving some bad contracts. Other than that it's pretty (frank)ng dismal |

You do realize the Phantoms have been great this year, and the D and goalie prospects are loaded right now in the organization? I don't understand why people are poopting on Hexy. If it's not Hakstol's fault, and it's the players who are (frank)ing up, what good does changing coaches do? I'd be surprised if any changes are made during the season, but you never know. With Hextall, he doesn't seem to deviate from the plan, no matter what, which is good. This team isn't going anywhere special no matter who is called up, or what changes are made. |

So if you gave Hakstol the Washington Caps or Blackhawks roster, and they played his system, it would still be ineffective?

Charlie actually just asked about the too much low-high (bc of course he did) and not enough slot chances. Hak said, No. And that they need to work on getting them through better from the blue line. |

Low to high system? Did you just make that up tonight? Hakstol's system is not the issue. So now in your view, we have two coaches in the organization with bad systems. Both the AHL and NHL head coach. When is Hextall going to catch up to this. Hakstol deserves criticism but you're barking up the wrong tree. The team is just not prepared to play with high energy and emotion to execute the system and the game plan. It's mostly on the players but you can't remove the coach from culpability.
Kane and Panarin would make plays. |

Well, obviously they're doing something right down there, since they are third in the league. - feelingkettle
No, that's not a good enough argument. Patrick Roy is a good coach because he won the Jack Adams. See how that logic works?
And the Phantoms were one of the worst last year. Maybe it has more to do with making a complete roster overhaul signing the best, star caliber AHL players and having the best prospect pool in the AHL? It's not like bad coaches don't do well sometimes on the merits of their team, and we're only halfway through the season yet. I watch a ton of Phantoms games; people who also watch them a ton and know their intricacies on a game-to-game, shift-to-shift level also loathe Gordon for reasons I could write you single spaced pages about. Players can do well in spite of a bad coach, and they can do poorly despite a good coach. Go look at recent Leaf history for that. I despise Gordon on a process level. And no, I don't think he's anything more than a cling-on to an AHL All-Star team's success. Don't agree, fine. But don't just cite their record unless you believe also that a coach is automatically bad too because a team's record is poor. |

Hasn't been much fun for a while. I've been a Flyers fan since the cup days. I accept the fact that we're not going to win the cup every year, but I don't think it's too much to expect to be entertained. |
