Where will the States get their Lumber from? Hydro? Manufacturing ?(most of what they won't take from China will/could be back in the states....but I'm quite sure they will need Canada to cover for the rest). - WaterBoy
Kentucky? They have plenty of lumber in the states, it just costs more. |

the Americans produce more lumber than anyone. they can get it domestically if Canadian lumber is tariffed up the wazoo. hydro... if you take Trump at his word Americans will have lots of other energy sources. manufacturing... again, if you take Trump at his word, they'll be looking domestic as much as possible. Canada doesn't necessarily compete in the same realms as China in terms of exports to the US. Trump isn't about making American exports more attractive, he's about pricing imports out of the market.
not saying whether Trump will be god or bad for America but at his word, i can't see him being great for Canada.

outside of keystone how will Canada benefit from his presidency? he could be disastrous for manufacturers who depend on exports to the US, ditto for lumber exporters. if he really tightens immigration laws you could see more strain on Canada's system. and in any territorial dispute with Russia in the Arctic, jeez i wonder whose side he would take. - DoubleDown
There's no talk here about the state of things in Ontario and Quebec. There's still a prevailing attitude of "(frank) those guys" in Sask and Alberta. |

When I lived up north and worked bartender some execs from the industry in the US would fly up there. They were amazed at the amount of forest. Then again, trees take 3 times as long to grow with the long winters.
As for hydro, if you take Trump at his word they'll be firing up coal generators. |

You sound as nervous as those queers in Ottawa.. - pete26
you just saw a sworn in President tell the world that he's going to close off economic avenues to the world's largest economy and renegotiate trade deals to the benefit of his country only, and you see no reason for that country's largest trade partner to have some anxiety over it?
pete i know you evaluate Trump on a personal level because he tells hard truths. personally i don't care if hookers piss in his mouth and he (frank)s goats and monkeys. im just looking at this pragmatically. sorry i just don't see how he's good for Canada ASSUMING he follows through on his campaign rhetoric. |

Canada is the biggest export market for 35 states, and 9 million American jobs rely directly on trade with Canada.

all rhetoric....they want to reopen NAFTA to screw the Mexicans mostly who have taken advantage of their cheap cost to welcome many US business down there. NAFTA actually benefits the US slightly more than Canada (US trade surplus), trade between Mexico and the US is HUGLY in favour of the Mexicans. |

True enough. Though if he IS as isolationist as his apparent policies seem to be, we're probably not going to have a very fun time for a little while here. |
