I understand what you're saying. I just think you're under-rating him.. I think he's a top pairing guy now, so a 2D at worst.. and he's only getting better.. Even if we got Shats I think Rielly would surpass him eventually. - Arctic_AARDVARK
i thought matthews would put up 50ish points so im obviously pretty good at projections. it's best to just agree with me here. |

Damn... McJesus scores with 2.6 seconds left in overtime; puck was in Reimer's glove, but the back half of the glove (and the puck) was over the line |

Yup, they reviewed it but made the right call. The Panthers were hella salty though |

Yes. On pace for 55 points, and good shot suppression.
Here's Rielly for comparison:
Now obviously these are just shot stats, but what it shows (combined with absolute G-A-P stats) is that while Shat is not as good at generating shots as Rielly, he generates better ones for him and his teammates than Rielly does, and is better at suppressing them (such that when he is on the ice more shots are towards the opposing goal - by a lot). Also, his most common partner is Gunnarson, and as we know, that means that he is likely pulling the weight in that partnership - lumlums
not arguing with your assertions / observations... but here's the glaring hole (at least to me)... Rielly arguably plays pretty much every shift against other teams top forward lines... of course there are exceptions. Shattenkirk plays behind Pietrangelo making most of his (perhaps not all) on ice time not against the toughest opponents.
I'm not arguing that Rielly is better than Shattenkirk nor the other way around. What I'm suggesting is that Shattenkirk hasn't every been the go to defensive stalwart in St. Louis... what suggests that he'll be worth 7M$ in Free Agency...

that's much more likely if the Habs and Bruins aren't involved. |

I don't think the Leafs need someone better than Rielly... Shats would be awesome to have, but he's not essential for the success of the franchise.. You can only really get those players through the draft anyways..
how about this.. Leafs do nothing until the summer.. then trade JVR for an early-mid first rounder and draft Liljedgren? - Arctic_AARDVARK
No.
If JVR is traded, its for an established Dman.
And of course the Leafs could use someone better than Rielly. Having a real number would be great.
Just dont think those are easily available. |

Goals per hour?
They do realize that...oh nevermind, I don't have the energy to fight this. |

Shat does however play well over 20 minutes a game as St. Louis very heavily favours their top 4 and shelter their bottom pair. As such, that will put Shat out against higher quality of competition than you might expect from a typical second pair guy.
Put simply, I see nothing to believe that he couldn't competently play first pair minutes in TO, especially as we spread minutes out more equally. |
