I guess that was the Flames rational for trading away a young, two-way 20 goal winger

I like your list but I don't like Liljegren or Rasmussen. I'd like Tippet at 5

- CanuckDon

Skating puck moving RHD rate highly, not easy to find.
I too am not sure on Rasmussen yet. Not sold on big questionable skating centres.
I prefer we get a playmaking C who controls the tempo & can chip in 15-20 goals.
As we sit we have goal scorers on the wings that just need that catalyst to help them.
The next Hank is what we lack the most. Size & puck protection is a must.

Don't see how we could pass on him if he's available.
Talk about dynamic offense. Kid was still throwing up a ppg while lingering with mono. It is odd how he's been shuffled around 3 leagues plus the U18's already this season though.

Still, he would also be able to make the jump to pro next season plus allow us to trade from a position of strength (defense).

I have never been impressed with Liljegren although, my veiwings have been limited to Youtube. Where are you getting the PPG numbers? tier 3? He hasn't produced in the SEL
Edit. Also a huge disappointment he wasn't selected for the WJC

What abilities? Virtanen is supposed to be the offensive dynamo. Seeing has how they both have yet to play a single full NHL season, we'll leave that out knowing full well Virt did demonstrate better offense while B.G is doing better defensively but, Gaunce literally outperformed Virt at every level thus far.

Gaunce:
OHL: 0.91 ppg.
Utica: 0.56 ppg.

Virtanen:
WHL: 0.84 ppg.
Utica (yes, still early): 0.27 ppg.

Gaunce is the defensive specialist yet still out-performs Virt offensively lol. Now I'm not saying Gaunce has the higher offensive ceiling at all, because that simply isn't the case, but Brendan has shown at this point, to bring more to the table.

All in all, i was not attempting to compare the two but simply demonstrating the unpredictability of 1st round draft picks.

- Whiskey-Tango

Can't compare these stats. JV played less games in Junior and AHL. Gaunce's numbers were better in draft +1 and +2. JV didn't really have a +1 season due to surgery and just getting back into it before the season ended. Compare draft years and JV makes Gaunce look like trash. In about the same amount of NHL games JV has out performed Gaunce in every statl. JV is far superior to Gaunce and is 3 years younger.

Draft year.
Gaunce: 28g, 68pts in 68gp. 1.00 ppg.
Virtanen: 45g, 71pts in 71gp. 1.00 ppg.

NHL
Gaunce: 61 games, 5 points.
Virtanen: 65 games. 14 points.

Difference in first round draft position: 20 spots....

Who cares? Virtanen is tracking better than Gaunce and he should be. I don't quite understand your argument. Is it that Virtanen was a bad pick? I don't think many would argue that at this stage.

He's got insane wheels. I like him. We have no shortage of defensive and two way D. This looks to be exactly what we need for our PP as well.

Playing with mono, 17 years old and a dominate Swede team ahead of him...

He has fallen from the number 1 ranked European skater to number 6 or 7...the drop is on, just like Kylington

Edit. Also, Vantel said no more Swedes

Is he though?
The only thing Virtanen has going for him is the benefit of age and the assumption that he will be more productive then Gaunce in the NHL and/or AHL at the same age.

Last year, Virtanen had the benefit of playing upwards of 15 minutes a night a good amount of the time shadowed with the likes of the Twins or Sven and Bo.

Gaunce is getting 8 mins playing with Skill, Chapoo, Megna etc.

My original point, which seemingly degenerated into a pissing match between Virt and Gaunce, was to demonstrate that first round selections (just like any pick in particular) is basically a matter of luck, regardless of if you pick 26th or 6th overall.

I find it odd that many poster can already call Gaunce a bust when, apart from a difference of 9 nhl points, has actually tracked the same if not better then Virtanen in both junior and the AHL.

You know that there are several scouting agencies/sites and almost all of them have him top 5 OA or better?

I saw the update you are talking about...

I think it's safe to say you should draft Swedes then.
