Given where you are it could be either, but if they were that big very likely it was coyotes. As long as it's a singleton or just 2 you should be fine. Obviously don't test it. But the old cliché they're more afraid of you than you are of them is true. Unless they're in a pack, that means they're hunting, then worry. But even suburban coyotes that are used to people are really skittish.

I've heard coyotes howling/cackling in the woods before. It's weird, there's a lot of wildlife here, and it's not like I'm out in the country or anything

No, but there's a lot of woods not that far away, and there's a lot of water too with the canal and the creek.

Appleseed is probably my all time favorite comic. You guys *kinda* remind me of Pantera. But im not super into the detail of that genre, so i could be completely wrong.
