STL wouldnt trade him anyways unless he planned to go some where long term. STL is in a playoff position and are going to want back a return that will help them in the playoffs. They are not looking to rebuild.

Greatly disagree there. STL can get enough pieces for Shattenkirk to trade for his rental replacement, another rental at another position and still have something left over like a pick or prospect.

Trading Shattenkirk when you know he won't stay can improve your team now depth wise and later value wise.

That said cap strapped teams r in their own self induced mess.
Blame it mostly on GM's for this tight trade market due to cap spending.
With the expansion draft coming up it exacerbates the situation more so.
The trend of locking up of RFA's longterm even more so yet.
All in all its contributed to a stale & boring trading market.
