If you want to cut enjoyable things out of your life so you can live to 97 instead of 89, I don't understand you.

I was buying a lot of Perrier, Pellagrino even store brand, was costing a fortune because I mostly drink water. My wife bought me a soda stream a couple years ago, best investment ever.
- LeafMan

We have one too. If ever I want a mixed drink, I'll just fire up some sparkling water, squeeze of lime and some gin/vodka. Five of them is about the same calories as one rum and coke

Pop is absolutely the worst. 150-200 calories of refined sugar at a time, and that's just one serving. And people never just have one serving. I've known people who literally drink 750+ calories of this junk every day, and it's not just the calories that are the issue, it's the fact that it causes your blood sugar to spike so (frank)ing high from even a partial portion. I'd be willing to wager that if you examined the health history of a good three quarters of type-2 diabetics in North America, you'd find an excess of either pop, booze or both to be involved.

And just in case you think Gatorade is a healthy alternative:

I was trying to explain this to my brother - he was working out (to lose weight) and drinking Gatorade during his workout, and Vitamin Water (possibly the dumbest product ever invented) after his workout.

I told him that I didn't drink Gatorade on any runs less than 30 km, and explained why.

It kinda shocked him.

That was the big one for me. I still indulge in the odd pop or bad for me meal but I self cook a ton and drink pretty much only water and coffee. (Don't worry, no cream or sugar. Just a tsp of milk)
- markmark

im pretty bad.. in fact i demanded Lums find me a waffle house yesterday so i know if its any good..

but my friends in cgy are health nuts so im hoping some of that rubs off on me.. Like a can of salmon and a cucumber for dinner type of nuts..

100% agree...

except for the booze part.

I'm a living testament that there is no correlation between booze and diabetes

About 10 years ago I decided to cut some of the crap out of my diet.

Of my pretty much daily staples, pop and fries were dropped.

No way could I sacrifice the booze.

Glad to hear that about the Soda Stream. I've got $100 gift card to Canadian Tire and went to grab one because I (frank)ing love sparkling water. Apparently a $20 off sale over the holidays was enough to sellout every city within 100km of the GTA.
- markmark

Just store brand sparkling water was costing me $75 a month, that is 30 1 litre bottles.

A sodastream cartridge costs $20 and does around 60 litres, add in a Brita filter that does around 150 litres ( add $4) that is $24 for 60 botttles of sparkling water, taste exactly the same as Perrier etc...

Vodka sodas are great for rehydrating during a long night of drinking too

or being a truck driver...

The whole survival of the fittest theory is coming full circle in America.

Obama and Michelle tried to make things better by making it mandatory kids eat fruit and vegtables at school... So congress reclassifies pizza and a vegetable..

- Arctic_AARDVARK

Yeah, that's a (frank)ing mess. Plus, real italian pizza has about 1/10th the cheese of the american monstrosities, so you can have a real pizza without it being 2000 calories of congealed cheese.

the entire food industry is phucked... they add sugar to everything.

try and buy a jar of tomato sauce, even the simplest "flavour" that doesn't have sugar - almost impossible to find

and just like the drinks... breakfast cereal is nuts how much sugar is in that crap

Hell yeah. When I was in Jamaica I drank either those or gin sodas all the time during the day, never got dehydrated

There's a way to eat garbage and be healthy.

It's all about moderation and burning those calories off somehow.

I personally love eating garbage and drinking too much... it's like 2/4 of the things I love most in life.

Italian pizzas are olive oil based, they are not what you see here in N. America.

You ever had real Chicago-style pizza?

About the most disgusting thing I've ever eaten.

First bite is pretty good.

By the end of your first piece, you are sweaty, nauseated and ashamed.

A friend of mine had a serious drinking problem. With Coca Cola. I used to always wonder, how is this guy about 100 pounds overweight, I never see him eat much. Turns out his habit was to crush at least one and often two litres of cola every night.

A few years ago he felt sick after playing some basketball and they had to take his gall bladder out. Then this past year he was diagnosed with an enlarged, fatty liver like alcoholics get. He barely touches the adult beverages. Finally, he started getting blurry vision and extreme weakness, and was diagnosed with diabetes.

Still I see him with take out combos and stuff, it's crazy. I binge drink and eat my share of garbage and up until recently smoked cigarettes, and I'm a hundred pounds lighter than him at the same height. But I cook, and when I eat garbage I know what I'm eating, I have a running calorie count in my mind and the nine other times out of ten, I'm eating home cooked power foods.

It's crazy, I'm pretty sure I'm going to some funerals in the next few years because of (frank)ing pop and bags of chips.

Buy passata (strained tomatoes) and make your own. Just check before, but almost none of them have more than one ingredient. I do that, throw in some fresh herbs and onions/garlic - sorted

The authentic Italian pizzas only have a sprinkling of parmagean, that's it.
