Heard a Crazy stat, that was the first game the Leafs won after trailing in the first, I mean this team is only getting better, crazy to think about that half-way through the season and still be right in the thick of a playoff spot. Really fun to watch too.
- PVL29

I feel like that stat is a bit misleading- Leafs are by far the best first period team in the league... there can't have been more than a handful of games where they were trailing after the first to begin with.

Good to see them hold onto a lead, though.

I also heard (lastnight) that they have never come back after being down by 2 or more.. i think thats an even more concerning stat..

I worry that the generation of kids today are being raised without these skills - including my own daughters.

My oldest daughter is in grade 6. When I was in grade 6 (hell, when I was in grade 5), on PD days we would take the bus, then subway down to the Eaton Centre. We would then walk up Yonge Street, going into head shops and joke stores - all the way up to Bloor. Then we would head home - once again, on the TTC.

I couldn't imagine my daughter doing that with her friends. And that scares me.

And I want my daughter to have these freedoms - but I don't want to be arrested.

I used to walk home from school alone - in junior kindergarten.

Now, you aren't allowed to walk home alone until you are 10 years old.

Our poor kids are being raised without defence mechanisms. Just like Jake Gardiner...

Very similar to you Wedgie.

I grew up in Brampton, in grade 7 I took the Go Bus to Yorkdale and the subway / street cars to go to the Ex with a friend. My grade 5 son is about 7 or 8 (frank)ing years away from being able to do that. I wouldn't even let him walk alone to the corner store.

Times have definitely changed. Kids are less capable because parents allow them so much less freedom.

In a way, I am OK with it. I would prefer the independence and life skills, but I alto think the longer kids get to be kids, the better

Let me be crystal clear on this one point:

If there is anything wrong with this current generation of kids, it is 100 per cent the fault of the adults in charge.

- Atomic Wedgie

"fault" is a tough word. I would definitely agree though that modern parenting is the cause and the root of that cause is the awareness of the dangers to children out there.

I don't know if there are more or less dangers than there were when we were kids, but I know people are far more concerned and aware of them.

It's not that concerning when you realize 75% of their losses came when they lost a 2+ goal lead.

When I was a kid, me and three of my friends decided to go for an overnight hike to find the body of a kid who had been hit by a train.

We ended up finding the body, but we were bullied by a 127 lb. Kiefer Sutherland - not sure why we were ever scared of him.

But I fired off a pistol, and he ran away. In the end, we didn't end up taking credit for finding the body.

It's the paternal society thing where if you let your kid roam the neighbourhood on their own, you're seen to be neglecting them because they're not under adult supervision. Also, instead of teaching kids how to behave in dangerous situations, people seek to keep kids out of harm's way entirely.

Every once in awhile growing up, my mom used to have a chat with me before going out and make sure I remembered what to do if approached by strangers and the eventual tidbit of advice: if someone tries to kidnap you, scream and try like hell to get away because you're probably better off dead.

As people get older they become more cynical and less trustful of others.. in general i mean..

I truly think my parents generation (baby boomers) have no clue what theyre doing ever.. they are the easiest segment of the population to persuade. They grew up in the haydays of capitalism where jobs were plentiful and they believed pretty much whatever they read.. Now that the internet came along, along with many misleading news outlets you can pretty much find whatever you want to believe, and fear captivate people more than good news.. they always go on about how bad the world is now but in reality violence and wars have gone way down... The truth is lost and until something changes people will continue to believe the negative stuff..

Statistically speaking, it has never been safer to be a kid than it is right now.

When we were young, there was 1/1000 the media to inform that a kid was missing.

I understand, but parents can't wrap their kids in a protective shell. Kids get hurt... Shake it off and get back at it. Some of the parents these days are ruining their children...

Best line I've ever heard was from my kids' pediatrician:

"I don't worry when I see kids with a few bruises. I worry when I see kids with no bruises whatsoever."
