I love the extended video of the Matthews goal from the time the play develops. mainly because it starts with AM34 stripping Eichel of the puck

Yeah, and in Alberta, we also planted a burn. Helicoptered in!
In Ontario, Tree prices fluctuated a lot depending on the contract.....I think my biggest day was over 5,000 trees at 12 cents a tree. So a $600 plus day. Keep in mind this was 1999-2002. Not sure where tree prices are now. haha. Tenonitis only hit me from screefing. arms and shoulders were fine. As for blackflys....95% deet. surely I'll get cancer. Hence why I found yesterdays weed talk hilarious.

nope.. when i was a kid in the summer my mom would lock the door and say come back until dinner... the world was my oyster.. i would venture far from home.. learned some skills though my older friends..
and yeah doesnt get much more Canadian than me.. Leafs fan, mixed race, worked in the oilfeilds and treeplanted. I like strong beer and weed. Modesty is a part of my daily life (AA is my alter ego), i make maple syrup in the spring... - Arctic_AARDVARK
I worry that the generation of kids today are being raised without these skills - including my own daughters.
My oldest daughter is in grade 6. When I was in grade 6 (hell, when I was in grade 5), on PD days we would take the bus, then subway down to the Eaton Centre. We would then walk up Yonge Street, going into head shops and joke stores - all the way up to Bloor. Then we would head home - once again, on the TTC.
I couldn't imagine my daughter doing that with her friends. And that scares me.
And I want my daughter to have these freedoms - but I don't want to be arrested.
I used to walk home from school alone - in junior kindergarten.
Now, you aren't allowed to walk home alone until you are 10 years old.
Our poor kids are being raised without defence mechanisms. Just like Jake Gardiner... |

thats nuts.. and i never came remotly close to 5000 trees..
I did lots of fly in blocks in BC and AB.. planting reclaimed oil leases. Burns are the best... we'd fight over who gets to plant them. |

I'm nearing 30 and I find it incredibly concerning how many of my peers could not get around a city let alone a rural area without GPS.

Kids are definitly more dependant on technology and whatnot, but i think the culture is still healthy in small towns.. Callander has like 1500 people and at night in the summer it's gangs of kids on their bikes prowling the streets.. make me a little nostalgic.. now its my little cousins hanging on the corner or staying up all night fishing at the dock.. not all is lost. I think it's natural for the older generation to find faults in the younger one.. I think kids these day are far more accepting of others, aka cool. |

My crew were just badass... a BC record was broken by a guy in my crew.. 6000 trees planted in one day..
- Arctic_AARDVARK
My buddy Jamie (Ernst) set the Outland Ontario record (though I have a feeling he may have cheated a bit with the j-roots and losing so many trees because he was overbagging), and it all started with him planting 5,200. Our crew leader started telling him "Yeah, well I planted 6,000" when I was younger, and so Jamie went out there, and jammed 7,900 into the ground the next day in 10 hours. THe crew leader was pissed and was sure he was going to make him replant. Nope. Problem is though Jamie's feet were (frank)ed for the rest of the week, he couldn't walk (trench foot)....
Which ties into the next story, we were told not to take food to the trailers from the food tent because of bears, or if we did to travel in packs. I forgot and did it anyways because I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed....sure enough, a big black mother (frank)er pops out and stares me down. I nearly poop myself, and right as he's making his move towards me, and I throw the food up in the air, the two dogs we had in camp came ripping past me and scared him away.
Also, not sure if the record still stands. It was set 16 years ago haha. |
