I mean, I suppose it's possible that Eichel takes a step forward. It wouldn't be the first time in the history of the NHl a player has suddenly taken a step forward. At his age, it's to be expected even. But I'd say that if you were to give any GM the choice between the two, at this point, 30 out of 30 take Matthews right now. At this point, the projection for Matthews looks pretty likely to be the third best forward in the league, behind Crosby and McDavid. Eichel is probably in the next tier down from there, with guys like Pat Kane, and probably Laine in there. Franchise centre, not among the elite of the elite though.
Of course, absolutely, things can definitely change.
