No. actually I didn't. i was genuinely curious about what the run of good fortune has wrought in the minds of leafs fans.
i don't bring it up like I said with the people i know since they are overly sensitive and in a forum like this it might be possible to have a civil conversation with some people. - kaptaan
What you're trying to do isn't working. |

I'll say it again. He is now playing in the Pacific with little pressure and a solid team in front of him, but not a 1b or anywhere near good because he's too small and he sucks. Hot wife though. - 1979AD
It's also cute that backing up Quick in his prime is considered being a 1b. |

You'd be better off just saying "yeah, you're right... I'm trolling but seriously, when will the Laffs collapse again? LOLZ".... You'd at least get an honest response to an honest question that way.... - SofaKingBored
That honesty would've warranted at least a 4/10 score. |

listen, i'm not going to denigrate the team by calling them 'laffs' in the leafs thread and have stopped using that term in general after some conversations with the some people in the summer.
do i like the leafs. no. but then again I don't like a lot of other teams too. i was genuinely curious about what actual leafs fans think of this current run and what the expectations are in the minds of the people in toronto.
i've stopped talking to people face to face about the leafs in toronto pretty much since the bruins leafs series a few years back cuz of the sensitivity to ribbing and trash talk. that's why i asked the question here. |

It could even get bumped to the 5-6 range if you add in a "1967". |

They've exceeded expectations this year. Pretty much everyone had them on the outside of the playoffs and they may still end up there.
A number of things have to really slide for them to go on the collapses of the past teams, I don't think those things will happen. Babcock is a competent coach and he has competent young players in Matthews, Marner, Reilly and Nylander.
As for the Canucks, how's the general feeling being a fan looking at a team in 22nd overall and realizing that's mediocre and without action they will keep falling as the seasons pass on.... |

Is this the kind of thing that has gone south in a hurry for Leafs and their fans in the past, when expectations get raised and then hope is dashed with a miserable run of luck, etc...?
I'm just wondering cuz, having lived in T. for the past 15 years it seems this is about when the bottom falls out, just when hope is at a peak... unless the bubble is still growing right now, but that just means it'll be more painful if and when it bursts... - kaptaan

Maybe you should try something like this - 'What do you guys think of this current run and what are your expectations for the rest of the season?'
That way you can troll the slow burn way; gain some trust and then you can start planting the land mines. |

i don't actually even care what kind of season Toronto is having. i'm just curious about the general feeling.
judging by the reaction to my legitimate question, which was not trolling, i can see some people are overly sensitive and highly strung.
2/10 for trolling, basically means I wasn't trolling... if I was trolling, i'd get a higher score. so thanks for recognizing. - kaptaan

thanks for the reasoned response.
i feel conflicted about their season. I don't like the idea of a tear down that might result in what happened in Edmonton for the past 12 years or however long its taken them to finally get to this point. I look at the Isles and they haven't escaped mediocrity despite a lot of horrid seasons and high picks. the leafs themselves struggled for many years until it seems this season.
I think the Nux have to make sure they draft well wherever they pick and keep adding complementary players over the summer and get to a point where they can challenge with depth. It's nice to get a top 5 pick, but having to be a bad team to do that sucks. I dont' recall the Sharks, Ducks or Kings having to be super bad for years on end to get some strong players in the draft. granted though they might have had a down year occasionally and picked high, but they bounced back with smart trades and development in the minors.
The Nux have added some good young players with potential like Stecher, Tryamkin, and Hutton on D and made trades to get guys that are still developing into better players like Granlund and Baertschi. So i'm okay with what JB is doing.
they can float around the bubble and keep picking up a good player if they pick top 5 or 10 (Horvat was 9) without a full rebuild and ease the Sedins out of the picture. |

You're hoping that no one remembers your ridiculous trolling shenanigans when you used to come by here more often. It's clear your game now is an attempt to catch some of the regulars on this thread spinning about your presence while trying to make yourself look like the reasonable hockey fan just here for casual conversation. It's thinly veiled, and been attempted by trolls better than yourself. |

Remember when we thought we could challenge with "depth"
And when picks outside the top 10 like Biggs and Percy could help the team rebuild

I'm genuinely curious what your motives are for asking this question. Clearly, there's a wide spectrum of fan expectations for this team - some will feel jaded if the team misses the playoffs again, some have tempered their outlook as per Babcock's recent comments, some will think the Leafs are undoubtedly Cup bound, etc.
Having said that, I would think the majority of the Leafs commentariat here falls into the Babcock mindset -- we're not blinded by this early, yet tasty morsel of success. We fully expect the team is not truly a Stanley Cup "contender" this year but we're optimistic about what lies in the very near future. We haven't had a core this deep to build around in many years and it's all very tantalizing.
So again, what exactly were your motives here? |
