I do want to be clear that a smaller or average sized player who is a prolific scorer in juniors can have deficiencies or a fatal flaw that prevents them from being a pro, just as any of those big, "tools" guys who have flaws that some will fill in with their imagination. I don't particularly like Alex DeBrincat. I also don't like Julien Gauthier. I like Clayton Keller; I like Tage Thompson. I really try my best to evaluate each player as an individual and not overweigh any one area. Truthfully, possessing raw "skill" can be no better than possessing raw "size," if other important areas are lacking. In the hockey community though, it's usually the latter that is more the issue, and you rarely see average sized players that were over-drafted at the time based purely on skill.

So some will maybe go a little too far the other way to compensate for the general hockey world. But you can't see all these brilliant young scorers with crazy skills and quick feet and minds who are passed over for lower ceiling big guys, become stars, wonder why they fell, and then do the same thing in future drafts. Sometimes guys explode afterwards, but oftentimes all the signs are there.

- Mononoke

I think we're pretty close in that size is not the end all be all, but it is an area that scouts (pro and amateur) look at and like. If size was the only thing that mattered, many great players would have never played in the NHL.

I do know it's a very difficult road for a smaller player. I'm a smaller guy and have played, and continue to play, sports a high level.

VDV could not even crack an oilers lineup that sucked....

Case closed!

Time for new youngblood!

I'm reopening the case. Who has a better roster? That Oilers lineup you refer to, or the Flyers lineup the last two seasons?

I enjoyed how PSG opened a can of worms talking about size and then just bailed. What a little provocateur. Go watch your Sixers.

Also, if you could post what Chris Pryor said in the most recent ESPN insider article, it'd be appreciated.

@CraigCustance Should Flyers go get max value for their UFA D-Men (MDZ, Streit, etc.)? What could they get? #CustanceCorrespondence
— Joe Plaza (@jeplaza14) January 12, 2017

This is a great question because there is value to be had for borderline playoff teams to cash in on a seller's market, since there will be so few sellers this year due to the parity. And there’s no shortage of teams looking for defensemen. Nearly every contending team would like to add defensive depth, especially the kind that offers some offense like Mark Streit and Michael Del Zotto. Streit is a veteran who can really help a team’s transition game and power play, so he’d have definite value. Carolina got a third- and fifth-round pick for John Michael-Liles last year, so to me, that would be the baseline in a deal for a veteran defenseman like Streit. Justin Schultz, who has been great in Pittsburgh this season, cost Pittsburgh a third-round pick at the deadline. So that’s your market. The plus side is that the Flyers have young defensemen lining up and ready to go. I chatted with Flyers assistant GM Chris Pryor for next week’s #ProspectWeek package, and he mentioned Robert Hagg as a guy the organization thinks is just about NHL-ready. “He’s made big strides,” Pryor said.

I knew he said something about Hagg, but thought maybe there was more. Thanks anyway. I'm really shocked it's Hagg who he would single out as being close to NHL ready. I don't remotely see it.

This is the part that irritates me the most when people talk about how teeny tiny their role is. VDV averages almost 12 minutes and PEB 14 minutes per game. Don't tell me that their effect is negligible, especially when they are our #1 and #2 PKers -- not Couturier the most, not Read, not Raffl who doesn't even PK -- and they are out there defending every lead the last 2 minutes. Hell, last night, on a 5 on 3 against, Hakstol double shifted PEB instead of using Couturier. Only in bizarro world can you be the top PK duo, by far, on one of the worst PK teams in the league, despite actually grading out at the bottom of said team in terms of PK ability (and it's not hard to see why visually), over a large sample size.....and you're a minor role player who doesn't make a difference one way or another. You can't say the PK is important and VDV/PEB unimportant in the same breath.

I would just like to see a 4th line that every once in a while, and God bless him that was a snipe last night, score and help the team win. PEB is the worst scoring forward in the league over the last 3 years. Below even face punchers. VDV isn't far ahead, and he actually has the lowest goals/60 and the highest goals against/60 on the team over that span in easy minutes no less. No one is more in the negative of +/-. So this safe, reliable bullpoop is just that. Are they reason numero uno for the team's struggles? Of course not. But they play a sizable role, and they're the easiest fix.

Not only is he -15, but he commits incest. Considering Sanheim is incestuous too, that definitely makes Ghost even more redundant.

He's been better this year, partly because the team is far better down there to insulate him, but NHL ready seems like a gigantic leap. Like he doesn't even look great in the AHL and can still look lost at times or have brain cramps. I'm not a big fan tbh.

Also, in case anyone wanted an update on our favorite Flyers prospect, Tyrell Goulbourne has been the scourge of the ECHL with 9 points in 16 games.

The first thing is the Flyers aren't one of the worst PK teams in the league, so that's false information on your part. Flyers are pretty much middle of the pack on the PK in the league.

Secondly, what metrics are you using to grade Vandevelde and Bellemare?

Looking at a 3 year slice of goals against/60, I'm wondering why Brayden Schenn isn't used to check top lines? He's apparently one of the best defensive forwards on the team over a 3 year span.

MDZ and Manning are actually both in bed with his sister and they know what to do with it. Ghost is lucky to get to 2nd base. Trade him
