But no two players are ever the same are they? It's a bit of a fiction that 2 players are identical in every way but size and that all things actually are equal save for that. Skill and ability manifest in a zillion ways that it never just comes down to that -- or it'd be an easy hockey world we live in.
I'm not one to discredit big guys who can get things done down low. I want those guys too. I'm also not one to undervalue smaller players. Unfortunately, more to the point, many in the hockey world do overvalue size to the extent they overlook other glaring weaknesses that make them a worse player/prospect for the sake of it. We know it happens constantly. Ideally you have both types with their own strengths and weaknesses, because that's typically how it breaks down, barring a handful of stars.
For the Flyers, I see a lot of big bodies on the team (in terms of their core guys) and some big body prospects good at forechecking and strong 2-way. I don't see enough offensive catalysts. And watching this team that need is #1 long term. Flyers forwards forecheck and battle and are dedicated 2-way, but there is a lack of skill and creativity and scoring that has plagued this team for a few years. And this draft, as always, everyone here will go gaga over some 6'4" guy like Riley Tufte or Julien Gauthier, despite their weaknesses and despite the team's weaknesses. That's what irks me. - Mononoke
I think that players can have similar skill sets, and that size can the main difference between them. Are their skills sets identical? No, but is their net effect? Yes. I'm sure one could go through any team's decision to sign/trade for/draft two players and have size be the main reason a player was selected over another.
Also, one has to look at the deficiencies of each skater. Is the big guy a 'dumb oaf' who just dominates players because he's bigger? Is the little guy making it through hockey sense and skill?

Very much agree that "offensive catalyst" is the big hole on the club. G is aging, and other than him you have Jake/Konecny.
After that its a bunch of two way ditch diggers. The issue I have with the ditch diggers, is most aren't even that good at it. VDV, Belle, Cousins, Read, hell and throw in Weise because he's only played well for a handful of games. There is very little edge, or ability to wear teams down on the wall. They are just guys. Bodies.
I dont think they are a dirt slow club, but they can't transition fast effectively because 3 of the damn forwards know how to carry the puck more than 5 feet consistently. |

If I had the choice between 2 equal players in all skill and one is 5"10 185 and the other is 6'2 210 I am picking the 6'2 player. - nastyflyergirl

I do want to be clear that a smaller or average sized player who is a prolific scorer in juniors can have deficiencies or a fatal flaw that prevents them from being a pro, just as any of those big, "tools" guys who have flaws that some will fill in with their imagination. I don't particularly like Alex DeBrincat. I also don't like Julien Gauthier. I like Clayton Keller; I like Tage Thompson. I really try my best to evaluate each player as an individual and not overweigh any one area. Truthfully, possessing raw "skill" can be no better than possessing raw "size," if other important areas are lacking. In the hockey community though, it's usually the latter that is more the issue, and you rarely see average sized players that were over-drafted at the time based purely on skill.
So some will maybe go a little too far the other way to compensate for the general hockey world. But you can't see all these brilliant young scorers with crazy skills and quick feet and minds who are passed over for lower ceiling big guys, become stars, wonder why they fell, and then do the same thing in future drafts. Sometimes guys explode afterwards, but oftentimes all the signs are there. |
