Biggest problem is there's STILL no one banging down the door to put pressure on the Weise's and VDV's. This sucks, Laughton and Leier should be challenging but it didn't happen. Leier really just doesn't have the size to be a consistent 4th liner. He's not skilled enough otherwise. Laughton doesn't battle near well enough and his play away from the puck is atrocious. And now Cousins is a consistent scratch.

At least one of these guys should have been in the picture by now. None of their stories have been told but they're not in the picture and it's an organizational setback.

Weise just signed a 4 year deal to be a 3rd line winger, according to Hextall, and has actually been OK, as we discussed, defensively and trending a little up offensively recently. But his spot is pretty much his.

As for the other part. The door has been banged down for a long time. Kids have already broken in, stolen everything, and vandalized the place. It doesn't matter.

I posted this in the last thread a little before the new blog was posted. Figured you enjoy it:

I'm extremely high on Myers and Lindblom as well. Without looking into it too much, I can't remember a player at such a young age dominating the SHL like he has since maybe Backstrom.

Are you talking about the Niskanen one? From 2 years ago? I don't think that's the underlying cause of everything bad in his career. His stats have been pretty consistent since then, and he recovered fine. If you're talking about the postseason one, he still had 100+ games in to evaluate all his issues manifesting themselves, and he's doing fine in the AHL this year too. Not saying it hasn't had any effect long-term, because I simply don't know, but it's not like he was a stud in the making and then it's been night and day since. He was always a bit low ceiling. He could just be what he is because that's what he is. It happens. Inability to play defense and read the play at an NHL level seems unrelated to me, and physically he still moves the same. I see the Phantoms regularly. I don't notice anything different.

I don't think it's the underlying cause of everything bad in his career either, but you also can't dismiss it as a factor. Real easy to get derailed as a young player, have a physical issue, and the pressure of wanting to make it as an NHL player, all combined can knock a player off his game. It can lead to confidence issues. Last night when talking about Giroux, you stated that you though it might be a mental issue. I think the same could apply to Laughton, combined with the concussion issue. He also could be just what he is. It does happen.

Do you think Philippe Myers is a bust now too because of his 2 concussions in 2 months, as you ridiculed someone over? If he busts, can we point to that?

- Mononoke

This is a ridiculous statement. One, I've never said Myers is a bust, or even insinuated that. Every player is an individual, and they all develop individually. I would think that a guy like you who has in-depth knowledge of every player on earth, right down to the pee-wee level would know that about player development. I definitely think concussions can slow and hamper a players development. By the way, the poster who made that statement claimed that Myers career was in jeopardy because of the concussions, and not that he was a bust. That is what I objected to.

well with Streit out he really still is. you think Schultz is better?
- nastyflyergirl

I assumed Streit was in tonight with Gudas getting the "healthy" scratch. But if it's between Schultz/AMac, flip a coin.

I'd rather he be the BearJew from the Bastards...he could use that bat to help clear the front of the net...

Laughton not making it as a regular NHL player would be a setback. Leier and Cousins, not so much.

It would honestly surprise me more if he was a Flyer a year from now than if he was not.

He can work on all the things he wants down there. He has over 100 NHL games and over years has presented the same exact issues across multiple seasons. There has been zero growth in those areas. He's turning 23. I'm hesitant to just completely write him off because things happen, even at that age, but this "he's gonna be a 3C or 4C" talk.....he's barely shown he's an NHL player at this point, and his center-ice work has been a disaster. He can look fine in the AHL all he wants -- but he hasn't even looked close to dominant down there. At this point, I expect nothing out of him and we'll work up from there.

(And his shooting ability would actually probably be good on the PP if they ever once tried it. It always struck me as odd why they've never tried it, except a short bit under Berube.)

Finally someone who has a realistic view of this kid...!

Unless Vegas takes him I expect him to be on the team next season. Hextall has shown a lot of patience with prospects.

Contrary to popular belief, coaching decisions and player usage is different in the AHL for developing players, than it would be in the NHL. Coaches will sometimes place a player in situations that help him develop the skills he needs to improve to be a better NHL player. For example, if a defenseman is a very talented offensive defenseman, they will frequently keep him off of the PP, and play him in defensive situations, to get that player to concentrate on those areas of his game. It's not always about who is the better player.
- MJL[/quote

I hate to break it to you, work on whatever he wants he still is an Ahler at best!

And yes it is about who is a better player...So by your logic sucking and not being better then a scrap heap scrub who out plays him is a good thing...
Keep being GM in unreality land where we play the not better player...Ridiculous.
