Kills me that people can think you're best player and top scorer ever year he was here didn't make the team any better it's actually hilarious, just because the leafs sucked with Kessel doesn't mean he made them worse, heck the first season without him they finished last place. He filled a hole just enough to make the Pens successfull.. he was arguably their most important piece in the playoffs.. he's near the top of the league in scoring again. More points then anyone on the leafs.. but he makes teams worse.. do you not see how dumb that sounds.

We did something similar but it in a box and you lift the box all the stuffing would come out.

A PPG player makes your team better...yes of course.

But a PPG player doesn't make your team a playoff/Cup team without other key pieces.

Better?

Further, the timing of Phil with the Leafs was bad. We needed other pieces. Would I want Phil back....no but just because he's soft and I don't like soft players. Loved his shot and skating though.

Why didn't the Leafs win the Cup with Phil then? Answer that question and that's the only point I was trying to make.

Phil is a (frank)ING AMAZING player except his softness. Phil's PPG play makes teams better BUT when I talk about making a team better, I am not talking about the difference from 30th to 26th....I'm talking about a Cup win.

You can't make that statement definitively because...well...it's not true....Phil didn't make our team better. Fact. Phil didn't make the Bruins better. Fact.

Phil filled a hole on a very strong team and made them just enough better on the 3rd line for a very successful Cup run. Fact.

Sorry guys like Phil do not make teams better like a Toews, Crosby, McDavid....even Matthews. And, if you don't have the other guys, Phil can make your team worse.

yes, far better to trust a whole load of stats that are derived from a subjective count of shots towards the goal, that are then expressed to a tenth of a percent accuracy and sold as "possession".

... maybe one day we will decide games based on shots towards the goal, and "possession".

The Kessel thing is quite simple. He's not a Babcock player and never will be.
In Babcock's system, it is also why Kap can't replace JvR (so please stop suggesting it)

Babcock rolls three lines using the same system.
1 net presence (Hyman, JvR, Komarov) who play the Holmstrom role of banging in dirty goals, and screening the goalie.

The other two forwards then become responsible for doing work along the boards to dig out the puck and start the cycle. Matthews and Brown do this very well together. Marner/Bozak, and then Kadri and Nylander (although this is why Willy ends up in the doghouse from time to time)

Kessel isn't going to be a net presence type and he continually showed that he would not do the work along the boards. This is why he was traded.
