.........He plays the most shorthanded minutes on the Jets d and is relied on heavily defensively. And only recently has gotten looks on the PP with Myers being hurt. A lot more aggressive physically and can still skate.
Put bluntly....his style is so different from Gardiners. - mykokes
He plays one second more than Polak per game short handed. He's also a part of the 5th worst PK in the league. Leafs are 8th.
I just don't see what he brings. Not great offensively. Not great defensively. Doesn't want to play in Canada. Probably looking for a contract his play can't justify very soon.
I don't know if i just described Trouba, Gudbranson or both. |

You can't make that statement definitively because...well...it's not true....Phil didn't make our team better. Fact. Phil didn't make the Bruins better. Fact.
Phil filled a hole on a very strong team and made them just enough better on the 3rd line for a very successful Cup run. Fact.
Sorry guys like Phil do not make teams better like a Toews, Crosby, McDavid....even Matthews. And, if you don't have the other guys, Phil can make your team worse. - underhill14
Point per game wingers don't make your team better. In fact, they can make your team worse. Guys like komorov make your team better. |

I would like to find the consensus opinion on what you guys think is a great 6 player D line up.
Not trades suggestions or anything but who would you keep out of the guys we have and who would you partner with them to make a Cup running D line up???
(I am talking about legit players in their respective #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 spots....not Doughty and Weber as a 3rd pairing.)
Rielly, Shattenkirk
Gardiner, Hamilton
Orlov, Zaitsev
Something like this for example. Discuss.... |

Come on. A PPG player who scores can score 30 goals dosnt make your team better?
That's just a silly statement you just made. |

Not without a few other pieces....#1C, #2C, #1-3D, #1G would be higher priorities IMO. |

Kills me that people can think you're best player and top scorer ever year he was here didn't make the team any better it's actually hilarious, just because the leafs sucked with Kessel doesn't mean he made them worse, heck the first season without him they finished last place. He filled a hole just enough to make the Pens successfull.. he was arguably their most important piece in the playoffs.. he's near the top of the league in scoring again. More points then anyone on the leafs.. but he makes teams worse.. do you not see how dumb that sounds. |

So the only way Kessel makes a team better is if another slightly superior player helpes him make the team better.
No. Kessel makes any team better.
There is no debate on that its just common sense that a PPG player would make your team better.

I'd take a run at Shattenkirk and Orlov. If/when their contracts become an issue Lou will deal with them

No those guys are good because they have a number 1 center and number 1 goalie in Matthews and Anderson to play with don't you get it?
If those two weren't on the team all those players would make the team worse. |

I wonder if Andersen gets the rangers tomorrow night, or senators on sat night.
Harder team (rangers) vs team just above them in standing and division (ottawa)
Can't see him getting both games after last weekend. - bryant

I think my point is getting lost.
A PPG player makes your team better...yes of course.
But a PPG player doesn't make your team a playoff/Cup team without other key pieces.
Better?
Further, the timing of Phil with the Leafs was bad. We needed other pieces. Would I want Phil back....no but just because he's soft and I don't like soft players. Loved his shot and skating though. |
